Hi there, welcome to DV. You can try stabilizing your dream to ground you into it, and prevent premature awakening. As the prevus poster said, the best ones involve engaging your senses in the dream. Touch objects, smell things, taste them even! Just anything that helps you anchor yourself into the dreamworld.

It seems as if whenever i fall asleep when watching tv, my experiences are more extreme. Is this because my mind is still very active at that point?
I don't really know, perhaps it's also because when you fall asleep while watching tv, you were just very recently exposed to strong visual input and that could quickly affect the dreams you start having.
