So far my favourite option is to buy one of those smart phones. It would give me more options to adjusting a ring tone, recording my voice after etc.

Excellent start, and EWLD is a fantastic book that helped me a lot when I first started.
As far as alarms go, smart phones definitely aren't a bad way to go - they have options for ring tones and you can adjust the volume to whatever you desire. The voice recording works really awesome for people, I like that you don';t really even have to get out of bed or write anything. I share a bed with someone though, I don't think she'd appreciate me vocally logging my dreams at 3am
