From what I have experienced, there are different levels to the Astral plane that we can visit.
The mid-level area is where people are when they have the usual crazy/confusing/silly/embarassing dreams. In this level the dream is all from your subconscious - things you're worried about, mostly just people you know, they always say things you thought they'd say, they follow you around; etc. Nobody in this level is real, they're all derivatives of your personal knowledge and feelings. You can even test them - they can't answer questions that they would normally know the answer to, unless you already know the answer yourself. I think these made-up characters somehow look to your mind to answer the question. I never learn anything new on this level.
The higher-level of the Astral plane is different, though. This is where people's constructs exist, great rooms and scenarios and lands to explore, which they built somehow. These constructs can exist for a long time, like months or years probably. When I see other people on this level, I get the sense they really are other people; because they don't pay as much attention to me as I usually want; sometimes I say something I thought was ordinary but it surprises them, which was unexpected for me. (The unexpected never happens in the middle Astral level; with regular dreams.) I see groupings of people separate from me, like little cliques of people chatting or wandering around. I don't have time to meet most of them. This is like the greatest Virtual Reality world I've ever seen - a world of man-made worlds, really. Some of the greatest games exist on this level - I've played a few of them, they're truly amazing.
So I think there really are other people who are seeing you, as you see them, on this higher Astral level. Some of them may live there, and don't have physical bodies like you and I; while other people there are probably like us. But I have never been able to verify these kind of dreams are being shared. I've tried saying, "what is your phone number? Let me remember it so I can call you when I wake up, and ask you about this dream!!" I've tried to do this a few times, but it hasn't worked yet - I either don't hear the answer clearly, or I hear a phone number but can't remember all the digits once I wake up.
So I can't "prove" that shared dreaming exists, but I believe it does.
