Welcome to the forum and welcome to lucid dreaming!
What a great hobby you've picked to pursue, it's so much fun and addicting when you start to really get into it.
I've had a similar problem with the hand reality checks as well. One fun thing about learning to lucid dream is discovering what works for you. I personally use the nose plug or epiglottis block RC (where you plug your nose with your hand and then try to breathe in through your nose, and where you block your throat internally and then try to breathe in, respectively - if you can breathe in while your air passage is blocked, then you're dreaming!). I prefer the nose plug one but the epiglottis block RC is good if you want to be stealthier.
But that's great that you've already gotten so close to having a lucid dream, it's fantastic in fact! I'm sure that at that rate you'll be lucid dreaming very soon. If you have any questions about lucid dreaming, feel free to send me a private message, good luck!
