I have been interested for quite a while, but only recently have I begun a real effort when it comes to this. so far I got into the hypagogic state once, and in several other tries I start to spasm which is something I want answers for.

Very nice. If you entered in the hypagogic state this means that you were probably close to doing a WILD. Keep in mind that HI might happen or might not, it is actually not important for attaining a lucid dream. So remember to focus in actually endind up lucid in the dream you will enter, thats what we aim for.
