      Hello to all

Hello! I'm fairly new to lucid dreaming and I'm joining this forum in the hopes of motivating myself to keep up the effort as I go through all the guides. It's been years that I've been vaguely interested in it, but I always ended up distracted before. I'm a visual artist and my main goal is using LD to help with a project that is proving difficult... but if learning to better control waking/dreaming/sleep paralysis can help cut down on my auditory hallucinations that would be a welcome bonus :-)

I assume that you are not talking about a mental illness kind of thing? And more of a hypnagogic/ hypnopompic Hallucination or Sleep Paralysis stuff? You can ignore those. Unless it is a real problem then I would advise seeing a doctor for it.

If you have a Dream Journal, you can start writing/ Drawing it. You don't have to write in it.

Yes, from what I've read it's a common parasomnia - right before waking up. Not a mental problem, but just an unpleasant way to start a day, haha.

That's a good idea, I will try it tonight! How did you guess the journal was the worst part for me?

Because you said that you are a visual artist. You also CAN use a voice recorder too.

Voice recorder sounds nice but I live with other people I don't want to disturb so it's not for me right now.

I'm still reading through many posts here, and trying to work out for myself a workable dream journal format :-)

      Welcome to the forum Harlequin!

I've had friends who were more visual types find success with a dreaming art journal, so rather than writing out your dream you can sketch or paint it, whatever medium feels most natural to you. On the other side of the coin, you can draw things you WANT to dream about as a form of priming or MILD.

Always been a huge fan of dream-inspired artistic expressions

      Hope this helps, happy dreaming!

Yes, I am trying that! Now, I'm doing a combination of sketches with writing to fill them in - trying not to disturb the memory by staying in the dim light in bed without my glasses makes just sketching hard, haha.

But knowing I was planing to do this when I woke up seemed to make it easier to remember specific images from my dreams.

That is an interesting idea, thank you! Have you done this before? The problem I'm thinking of is after drawing before bed, like last night, I'll just dream that I'm drawing/painting without it necessarily being a coherent image.

As a play on the advice of writing down your intentions for a dream I have in the past incorporated some concept art slideshow videos in my pre-bed night routine. It is not guaranteed but I have had some success mixing up media dream inspirations. Another good one for me has been listening to old radio sci-fi dramas (X Minus 1 is an all-time favorite), the auditory-only really helps flex my visual center to generate mental imagery/plot progressions that seem crucial to coherent dream recall.

Along the lines of recall, I know what you mean about not wanting to wake up too much to jot down the dream. Usually, I just lay in bed for 10-20min and let my mind replay as much of the dream as possible before moving or grabbing my phone to get the big points written. Sometimes I'll even make an outline with the series of events and then go back through to describe the details experienced.

More than just a technique, a dream journal is a core component, a fundamental, of lucid dream practice. A dream journal acts as one's personal "map" of the dream world and is an indispensable tool that every lucid dreamer should possess.

Dream journals can come in many forms; from a physical notebook to a digital record. More important than the medium used is the data that it collects and the regularity of record keeping.

A lucid dreamer without a regularly updated journal finds themselves in a position no less impaired than a cartographer without pen and paper, or a scientist without a means to record data.

You are welcome to make your own DJ! Here: https://www.dreamviews.com/blogs/

I would try to do it each morning, shortly after waking, transfer any dream memories and relevant factors from your night's sleep into your journal. If required, one can either use a voice recorder or shorthand system to quickly record key points that can be transferred, in full detail, at a more convenient time later in the day.

Note: It is not required to use the DJ system here unless you are going to do the lucid tasks, "The TasK Of The Month or "The TasK Of The Year". The Link for that is down in my signature.

The more data collected the better, beyond a record of just your dreams, additionally recorded data, you can (and should) also record your: sleep times, sleep quality, distractions, level of health, techniques used, sleep environment, hormonal cycles, diet, sleeping arrangements (partner/alone, etc.), and any other relevant factors.

Also, Before sleep, You can use your journal to note any dream goals or intentions for the coming night.
Regularly assess your dream journal for recurring patterns, clues to any lucidity triggers (either from within the dream or external factors), and to become familiar with the nature of your dreams. These assessments are a time to categorize and update your list of dream signs, improve your familiarity with the dream world, search for recurring patterns in your sleep, assess the effectiveness of different techniques, or be creatively inspired by your dreams.

Thanks for the link! I'm giving it a try. The categories and tagging on this site seem much more useful for reviewing like that, I don't think I have the patience to search like that through a physical journal :-)
