I think you're already on the right track. You tried the MILD technique and appear to have gotten yourself right at the dream's doorstep. Unfortunately, you woke yourself up after experiencing that "strange feeling". You've also succeeded in recalling your dream where you said you normally don't remember them.
My advice is to simply keep practicing what you're doing. You'll start to get used to that
"strange feeling" and recognize what lucidity feels like. When you do, you won't get as excited and wake yourself up. You'll be able to go on to the next step which is learning how to extend your lucidity time.
