I'm very new to this concept, and I don't know how to wake myself up in time to write my dreams down. I won't be able to use the alarm clock trick (the people I live with will kill me) and the "water drinking" trick is too unreliable.
I can only remember a dream or so a week, and I don't think that's enough to move on to the next step.

Do you remember any dreams? What happens when you wake up? Next time you wake up try to watch what happens. Write a note on your bedside table or something to remind you. There must be a point when you realise you are awake and then open your eyes, to check the time or whatever? The trick is very simple really - as soon as you realise you are awake - open your eyes and reach for your dream journal, don't think about anything else. Work backwards from the last thing you do remember - more will follow without a doubt. And it will get better very quickly. It even seems like your unconscious mind appreciates that you are making the effort to listen to it and rewards you with big dreams. Its the best LD induction method too - with no other methods needed IMO.
