My first lucid...

So a few years ago I had been introduced to the idea of lucid dreaming, but after a few weeks of trying to attain one with no result, I gave up and moved on. However, just a few nights ago, a friend of mine let me borrow the movie "Waking Life", and the urge to become lucid while dreaming came back in full force. As I fell asleep that night, a few things occurred that have never happened to me before while sleeping/dreaming.

As I was asleep, I felt myself become concious of the fact that I was about to dream right before I actually entered my dream, and I started to feel these intense rushes of energy in my body. I then woke up in the room I originally fell asleep in, however, the digital clock above my bed said it was 7:52 at night, although it was still daytime outside my window, almost exactly as bright as it was when I went to bed at 3:30 pm. I then proceeded to check the light-switch, but it would not work and the lights in the room would not shut off. I came to the conclusion at this point that I was dreaming, and the first that came to mind was to fly.

I started to levitate to the ceiling, and as I reached it, the first thought that came to mind was that I could just go through it, and I just kept rising, moving through it as if it were water. I eventually was above my roof, but then a person ran past me and jumped off it, and I freaked because I doubted that it was a dream and if this was real, he would be dead, this last thought pushing me out of sleep.

I was just wondering if anything similar to this has happened to anybody here on their first time, and what I could do to stay in the dream longer? (I have another one since then, but it ended as quickly as the first)

Hey, camjim. That is a great first lucid dream. You did a great job levitating and going through the ceiling.

When you started having the dream, how asleep were you? If you were just starting to drift off, it would be a WILD ( Wake Initiated Lucid Dream ). That's when you start from a conscious/awake state and are able to enter a dream without losing consciousness. Often when that happens you feel a rush of sound or energy as you descibed.

As far as staying in a dream longer, there a a few things you could try. One is to focus on things. If you start to feel the dream fade, really focus on something. I like to focus on the feeling of my hands rubbing on my arms. You can look at something instead. Hands work well for that too.

Others say that spinning helps them stay in a dream. I have never tried that. But enough people talk about it so it probably works well, too.

Also I've found that if I have a pre-planned task that I set out to do, I'm less likely to wake until that task is done.

Sounds like you had a very successful first lucid dream, congratulations. You've already levitated and passed through solid matter - not bad!

guys for the feedback and the warm welcome. The feeling coming out of the dream was one of the best I had in a long time, but most people I talked to about it thought little of it and were very skeptical. I'm just glad I was able to find individuals who appreciate it as much as I do.

Now that you mention it, that does make sense because I had very little sleep before that (I was up the entire night beforehand finishing a paper), this entire experience occurred during an estimated 1-1 1/2 hours of sleep. After reading certain WILD techniques, it seems that the excitement to become lucid kept me aware while I was falling asleep, thus keeping me conscious as I entered the dream state. I still can't believe how real that felt compared to non-lucid dreams though, because I completely thought for a split-second when I first opened my eyes in my room that I just woke up from my nap.

Yeah, false awakenings (or FAs) happen a lot..to me at least. That's why it's a good idea to do an RC (reality check) every time you wake up, to increase your chances of getting a lucid dream. Otherwise you could wind up waking up several times in a row. Funny, but rather frustrating if you're trying to get lucid.
