Are you referring to the WILD technique? That doesn't work in the beginning of the night, because you need to be in a REM cycle to work.

You might want to look into DILD (dream initiated lucid dream), which is mostly about reality checking (RC) throughout the day. It's a well working techniques for most aspiring lucid dreamers, but as with all techniques, it requires patience and persistence. When it comes to falling asleep, just let yourself fall asleep like you use to. WILD and FILD are mostly the only techniques that require falling asleep in a "different" way.
