Being aware in your dreams IS lucid dreaming. You're right, though, the first step to having a lucid dream is being able to remember your dreams. Otherwise, how will you know when you've had one? Here are some helpful tips to remembering dreams:
1. Being in a forum is a great first step. Discussing and thinking about dreams on a daily basis helps to remember them.
2. Keep a dream journal. This shows your subconscious that remembering your dreams is important to you. Keep it near your bed. When you wake, write whatever you can remember as soon as you wake up. Don't even get out of bed before you begin writing. Even if all you remember is a flash of color or a sound - wright it down - more will come to you later.
3. Keep your thoughts clear as you fall asleep. Hold the intention to remember your dreams clear in your mind.
