I think it more has to do with your intention to fall asleep. If you try to fall asleep, you won't. If you don't think about it, it goes automatically.
If you can't get to sleep, just start thinking about random stuff. Do not say: I won't think about sleeping, because then you are thinking of sleeping. Just say: I can do this. Then start thinking. Don't think hard, but just...I usually fantasize about a lot of different stuff. Sometimes I notice that I'm thinking about strange stuff, but it puts me to sleep every night.

I had the same problem, and this was my solution. Good luck

Don't lie in bed for hours trying to fall asleep. If you start to get frustrated, get up for a few minutes and do something relaxing in a dimly lit room. Then, when you return to bed, you should have an easier time getting comfortable and letting go.
