It's been several years since I've read EWOLD. There are many exercises in that book and I'm afraid I can't remember the one that you're referring to. Would you care explaining it a bit?

Also, for general tips on reality checking, check out our Reality Check Tutorial.

Ok, I just realized what I wasn't last night, which is that you must be speaking of the part about building your prospective memory in order to MILD. Is that right? I thought you were talking about straight up reality checks for dream signs and etc.

Absolutely. It's the bedrock of lucid dreaming. Reality checks have made me lucid countless times.

Everyone has their preferences. My personal favorite is the nose-pinch RC, which has never let me down. However, other people tell me that for them this is a very unreliable RC. I recommend trying as many as you can and seeing which work best for you. Consult the tutorial I posted above for a pretty comprehensive list.

Ah ok, I'm sorry! I was rather sleep deprived and insane the other morning

The goal with the MILD isn't really to reality check throughout the day, but to build up that prospective memory. This just means, your ability to remember to do things. You know when you go to the store, and you're walking around and you've got tape, and a bottle of shampoo, and bandaids... and you just KNOW that you're forgetting something that you told yourself to remember to forget? That's your prospective memory. The goal with MILD is to train that memory up, so that when you get to the store you can rattle off everything you needed.

Once you've gotten your prospective memory up, you should be able to tell yourself to remember to reality check. If you start working in things like, "I'm going to remember to reality check when I see my dreamsigns" and "I'm going to remember to reality check the very next time I see a person (personal fave)" you should be in good luck.

So regarding the targets... they are for building up your memory, and basically your awareness of "when I notice X, I will remember Y".
