      Increasing physical skills

      Greetings everyone!

As the title says: Is it possible to increase your physical skills in something?
For example, im playing drums. Can i then, through a LD, Train all night and then, instantly after waking up, sit down and play drums and have greater skills at it?
      THAT... WOULD... BE... SO... AWESOME!

I don't really know the answer to this, but I say, give it a shot! It can't hurt to try. Many people carry over experiences from the dream world into the waking one. Just make sure you concentrate on what you're doing :-)

      it is indeed possible.

there are some sleep laboratories which train sportsmen to get a better condition - the results are awesome.

some time ago they mentionend in the television an athlete who trained in his dream - he was a jumper.
in his dream he always jumped higher and further and the more he trained his skills in his dreams the better he became in the real world

here is a page about the whole stuff concerning sports and LD´s

Great. I heard about it at this site: http://www.lucidfun.com/

Its alot you can learn from that site.

So its possible for me to train up my skills in hitting with a baseballrack(I realy suck at it!)? If it gets boring to train hour after hour, i think im gonna go for handgranates.

      Yes and no.
Exercising in a dream will never build up muscle mass. It might build up confidence, (or cockiness), but you will never have the same experience as actually running 10 miles.

Say you need to practice running through the forest, you could very well practice this in your dream, but it wouldn't be the same as in waking life, nor would that "dream like state" be carried over, obviously.

      Muscles mass? No. Confidence? Yes.

Maybe when you do something in your dream (like jumping very high) your mind gets the general idea of how its done, and believes that you can do it in real life? Hey, I'm just throwing out my theories!

And as no-name said, muscle building is impossible while dreaming. Although that would be frickin' awesome.

You could practice some cardio, too, since there's a good chance that doing exercises in dreams will raise your heart rate bwahahaha. (good chance meaning, in the lab, x% of the time this happened, not that I'm randomly guessing)
Of course if you raised it high enough to make a difference, you'd probably just wake up.

It can do more than just build confidence, although that is a big part of it. Exercising or practicing specific physical motions involved with sports or playing musical instruments in your dreams will have the same mental effects as practicing in real life, i.e. if you do it right, you will get better at what you're practicing. It will not affect your physical body any more than your regular dreams do.

I dont mean muscle mass, i know thats impossible. But what i mean is to train the technique, so i actually hit the ball.
I mean, in theory, thats possible?

I read in "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" about a tennis player who was just entering her first big tournament. The night before, she had had a dream about tennis, and her technique the next day was perfect. She won the tournament.

      Lightbulb

well , if your dream is vivid enough the muscles you use in the action ( like running away from a frog-like human sized thingy :[ ) will activate your real muscles to a certain point . its something like a weak form of walking in your sleep.

I don't think so. You're in REM atonia while you're dreaming which means that your muscles can't activate, but if they do then you will wake up.

yellowlight is right. Lucid dreams don't help build muscle, they give you muscle memory. That means they can't make you stronger, but they can give you better technique. To test this, I'm going to (once I get better at controlling lucid dreams) learn how to juggle in a lucid dream. I don't think I've ever tried juggling before, so if I can master it in my sleep, I'll post it.

It'd be interesting to see if this idea would work: I skateboard, and abig part of skateboarding is trying non stop a new trick that your trying to learn. Say you want to learn a kickflip.....it took me 2 months of practising every day to get that down.

Now, basically all doing a kickflip is is the same exact motion EVERY SINGLE TIME; it's just a mattery of sticking it and riding away. SO, my point is, if you have this same exact physical motion burned into your head from so many unsuccessful attempts....could you possibly find the trick to the kickflip using your failed attempts in a dream, and master them in real life?

It's not like your learning a BRAND NEW trick; that would be impossible to carry on to waking life being as you have never tried the trick before in real life, so yoru mind would only be fabricating a image/feeling of what it thinks it would be like to do that particular trick.
