A few good reality checks include plugging your nose to see if you can still breathe, double-checking the time on a digital watch (make sure not only that the numbers look right, but that the time doesn't change, and that you are currently at a time that makes sense for where you are), and trying to poke a finger through your palm.
As for mantras, I doubt the effectiveness of them in the long-term. "I will realize I am dreaming, within the dream." "I will recognize that something is wrong, and then I will know that I am dreaming." are better mantras than "I will have a lucid dream tonight."
As far as dream indicators go (here we call them "dream signs"), check your journal! After two years of writing, surely some common themes pop up. How often are you chased in a dream? How often do you see friends that you've moved away from? Etc, etc.
