Im new to lucid dreaming and doing this from my ipod, so excuse any bad grammar.
But I also do not have much control and had a similar feeling when I first started trying to Lucid Dream, but I think the key is to start doing reality checks at all times during the day and to make it a habit. When you are doing it, make sure you put a lot of thought into it at all times, I too feel somewhat skeptical that it will work, but I had my girst DILD in multiple years because of an RC. Excuse me if I misread.
Edit: And as for flying, I have been having trouble too, where I can only do it by swimming through the air. I want to do something else, but in my recent one, I couldnt take off. I'm going to try imagining the feeling of flying fast as opposed to feeling the motions. That may work.
