It sounds like your experiences were DILDs, caused by your time meditating before sleep. That is almost like autosuggestion, or even MILD (Mnemonic ILD). For a true WILD, you need to pass directly from wakefulness into a dream. The transition is often very messy, with hallucinations, body distortions, paralysis, or "Out of Body" type stuff. It doesn't have to be messy, but it is for a lot of people. Also, it is very difficult to WILD when you first go to sleep at night. You are just not close to a solid dreaming cycle. Try to go through your normal routine after a few hours of sleep and a WBTB. I bet something wacky will happen.
