You DO use double negatives in Spanish and it is proper. You are supposed to use them. It is proper to say, "I didn't do nothing!"

If you say "I didn't do nothing" you are saying you DID NOT do anything, however if you say "Yo no hice algo", which is "I didn't do anything", it sounds really weird and no one says it that way.

Can you use a double negative and let it be meant like a double negative? Where the negatives cancel each other out?

I don't think so, I'm trying to think of an exception but can't find any, so I'm almost sure you can't use a double negative in spanish and mean it as a positive.

To answer both of Plathix's questions - the closest thing I can think of is that is like being weightless under water.
If you're familiar with the experience, you can even use it to take off, I suppose. Just imagine yourself pushing off the bottom of a pool or something but, instead of rushing water, think rushing air.
