      Hello, welcome!
To answer question 1: You have nothing to fear. Mirrors are different to everyone. If you are like me, you will typically see nothing but your own reflection. However, if you do get over worried about mirrors, you'll expect to see something scary and so you will. Just don't worry about it. Mirrors are just a sheet of glass.
To answer question 2: Simply be aware of your surrounds. Ask questions like "Should I be here" or "Is there usually a chair in the corner of the room?". And you could also look at clocks regularly. If you notice a sharp jump in time, you are asleep.

      1) In dream Logic and proportion fall sloppy dead. <- Jefferson Airplane, so yeah, mirrors look wierd, but they only look weird if you recognize them as looking weird, you probably won't even notice.

      2) I like memory checking. Try and remember how you got to where you are, try and remember the last hour or two, if you can't, then you are dreaming.

All good suggestions/information. I'll go ahead and add to it with my "spin" on things .

      1. Mirrors seem to reflect different things for different people. Usually when I look into a mirror I am nearly the exact same. I say nearly because there always seems to be something that is just ridiculous. I will look normal except maybe my hair will be green or my clothes will not be accurate. I have yet to come across something frightening in a mirror. In fact, I use mirrors quite often. I like to melt through/pass through a mirror and I always end up in a very unique place. For, your next lucid dream, make a point to seek out a mirror and see it for yourself. You will see that they are not bad at all and you can erase that fear early. This may sound weird (and maybe it is ) but pretend like you are within a lucid dream during waking life and examine a mirror. Look carefully and take notice of your movements, etc. This can help you prepare for the lucid experience more than you can imagine.

      2. Good preparation just before sleep can help lead to lucidity. As you are laying down to sleep get into a good frame of mind. Try to fall asleep EXPECTING to become lucid. Act as if you are an expert dreamer and you will achieve lucidity. If you can get yourself in the right mind frame (to where you actually believe you will become lucid as opposed to hoping you will become lucid) you can increase your chances greatly. Its alot like how an actor gets into character for a role. You need to pretend and actually believe that lucidity is easy and you will accomplish this task with no problems. It is also important that you don't get frustrated if you don't achieve lucidity. Just wake up the next morning and say to yourself, "Eh, its all good. I'll easily become lucid tomorrow night...No problem!" You would be surprised how far confidence and expectations go during lucid activites.

      Good luck to you!

Keep in mind that your expectations can heavily influence what happens in your dreams. If you are expecting to have a nightmare, or constantly worry about seeing mirrors, you might make it happen. Just try not to worry about it. Don't think about what you DO NOT want to happen. Focus your energies on what you DO want to happen. Fill your thoughts with all the amazing and beautiful possibilities of dreaming.

I've always been a firm believer that, Yes, you can do anything. Now some things can be difficult to accomplish and may even seem impossible sometimes, but with practice and determination, I believe anything in a LD is possible. Everyone has trouble with something...some LDers have trouble with flying, others have trouble with other actions (like teleporting, summoning things, changing dreamscapes, getting to the %&*#ing moon!!!(me, lol). Just like how everyone is a different person, everyones dreams and abilities within their dreams are different. Some things come more naturally to certain dreamers, but that doesn't mean the others can't become naturals (with whatever the objective may be). Like just about every other skill in this world, practice makes perfect.
