Another dislike: Comments that start with "I'm not racist, but [followed by racist statement]." Racism in general is something I just can't tolerate.

They aren't pointless. When someone asks you such a question, they're not checking to make sure you're prepared for an impossible situation. They're asking you to see what your priorities are, which is revealed by what you choose and how you answer. It's just a small way they can extract a little insight about your way of thinking and where your values lie. In the blind or deaf question, someone might say "I'd rather be deaf because if I were blind I couldn't paint." It's less about learning they're rather be deaf and more about learning that painting is something important to them.

Racist people are not bad people. Not necessarily. If a racist uses their bigotry to justify hurting others, you could call them a bad person. But whether we are white or black or asian or whatever, I bet most of us have people in our family that are bigoted against one ethnic group or another. Usually they don't commit acts of violence against the target of their prejudice but they will make hurtful comments out of ignorance. Do you hate that family member(s?) Do you ostrasize them?
