Newfoundland is renowned for its unemployment and collapsing fishing industry. Only in the last year or two have things turned around due to mining and offshore oil.
It's a nice place but it's isolated and you can pretty much only get there by plane. Newfoundland was the last province to join Canada (it was a British Dominion until 1949), so it has the most distinctive feel and cultural identity in the country besides Quebec. The rest of us tend to make fun of them a lot, Newfie jokes are similar to blonde jokes. I've heard some people compare them to Tasmanians...
The rest of Atlantic Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) is a little more clumped together with some bigger cities but is still mostly rural with of course lots of fishing. Decent beaches too.
Canada's awesome, I was on the east coast a few years ago, and there was a tuna that some guys had caught that was bigger than a person, no joke. It was at least 6 feet long, and they had to use a chainsaw to cut it's head off, it was grisly but pretty cool.
on the west coast we use chainsaws for something called logs.... but it sounds way more badass with a fucking fish!!!!
