Thread: Pet Peeves and the English Language

Instead of doing what everyone here is doing, I'm gonna go so what I thought this thread was about: Pet peeves about the English language itself.

First of, why do you need to differentiate between I am and you are and he/she/it is? What's the point? In Norwegian, we all simply er.
Secondly: What is up with your spelling? Delicious, though, thought, though, queue, eighth...
I really wish the creators of the English language had heard of phonography.

Sort of, I guess, but they still sound almost identical. I don't think I'd be able to tell the difference.

I don't like when people say 'literally' when they don't mean literally, or when literally is already implied. The word should only be used if you think that people would interpret what you say figuratively otherwise.

And it's shocking how everyone here knows how to speak other languages as well/ better than English. I can speak English and English only

So can I. The goal of learning Spanish seems to have disappeared form my brain. Maybe I should pick it up again.

Speaking of spanish, has "jajaja" been mentioned yet? Fuck you spanish pieces of shit, we're speaking english bitches.

Also I hate australians, in general. I don't know if that counts as a language pet-peeve or just plain bigotry, though.

I misread that first as pornography

Talking on that subject there is a popular thread on DV here which features the phrase 'hawt'. Presumably that is a bastardization of the common English word 'hot'.

Mind you I'm not complaining about the pictures though. Pictures are a universal language. After all they do say each picture tells a thousand words.

Pet peeve: I got this off of ebay

I could care less about this comment.

I used to say "Close the light" or "Hand up my homework" all the time. The first one is absolutely wrong, damn Chinese translation to English and I doubt the second is correct.

Also: There - their is one that is so unfunny.
English isn't my first language either, but it's just soo obvious when to use which... and yet half the internet is unable to use them correctly.

Especially if it's their first language. I'm not counting people with dyslexia or conditions like that. I've mostly seen errors like that on the internet. They seem to become butthurt if you point them out. It's a little like Chinese water torture. If you see the same mistake(s) a lot it will start to annoy you.

Who's = who is
Whose = I'm not sure what you call the "usage" of that word, but for example: "The man whose car is blue".

Probably my biggest 'GAH!' moment of all time comes when I see somebody has been too lazy to type TWO EXTRA LETTERS when they say 'Yeah', and just type 'Ya'. for some reason, i read it EXACTLY as it is spelled, and in my head, i hear 'Yah' (i know people do say that, but im not sure exactly where. Dutch?). whereas if I read 'Yeah', in my head, I hear 'Yeah'. I honestly dont care about apostrophes and capitalization, i dont mind 'lol's and 'ikr's and all the rest of those, 'they're' 'there' and 'their', but when I see 'ya' instead of 'yeah', it sounds all wrong!
okay, that was my big rant, my other main ones are stuff thats SO badly misspelled that it looks like they did it deliberately. or,"shtuf thatz sp badlly mispeld tha it luks lik thet did iy dellibritly"
Another annoyance is when people have no concept of periods and commas. when you type it in a huge big blob just like this its a little hard to follow just what your saying and it makes me judge you as unintelligent even if you arent.

We are not talking about typos, because those happen unintentionally. But some people use these words like that, just because they feel it's correct like that (which isn't).
