Exactly right. Waste products in the blood stream and lymphatic system are filtered through the kidneys. When someone has renal problems, their kidneys are not filtering the waste properly. Therefore the urea stays in the bloodstream, poisoning you. Urea is product of protein metabolism in the liver that creates nitrogen waste in blood. Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) is one of the core renal values to watch in a renal patient. When BUN levels start to rise, there are toxic levels of circulating urea nitrogen.

In a healthy person, urine should be relatively concentrated (i.e. less water and more waste). So, while taking a swig or two of urine won't hurt you, you could not live off it for long (and in my opinion, I would rather die of dehydration in the desert than drink my own urine).

Well, to get my water, I think I would use my fists on Cacti, b/c they are suppose to have water in them. If I fainted though, I would cry and beg for mercy, so my life would not be taken away, and I wouldn't go to jail!!

Anyone see the Brainiac episode where he tried to filter his pee enough to drink using reverse osmosis?

He ran it through the filter about 3 times until he got the level of disolved solids down to about 300 ppm.

Funny, he still almost puked when he drank it !

geez all he needed to do was evaporate the water out

course the ammonia would evaporate out with it too right?

I am of course talking about people with healthy kidneys, where the urea goes back into urine pretty soon.

In other words, they recieved amount of urea equivalent to 3/4 of all the urine you excrete in a day at once, and they still had less than 3,5 times of what blood urea they would have to get to induce nausea or vomiting, you can guess that the lethal dose would have to be a lot larger. The boy scouts have it figured out better than you.

As I said, you'd sooner have troubles from the high mineral content of urine (still better than eg. sea water!), rather than urea-intoxication. Which is most probably why they cared more about the level of dissolved solids in the show Seeker mentioned. And he "almost puked" only because he knew what it was, certainly not because anything else. Getting drinkable water from urine would actually be pretty useful, since it is 95% water, you can carry a lot less water for eg. long space trips if you can effectively recycle urine, I'd not be surprised if they were actually doing it now.

It doesn't matter if you have healthy kidneys or not - if you're drinking concentrated waste products, your kidneys will only be able to work so hard. They will fail at some point.

That's why I never bother washing/drying my hands after I hit the pisser. The salt from the bar nuts dries up whatever spillage i have on my fingers.
