This isn't just a rant, I'm trying to figure something out here, so, bear with me while I explain what happened.

Today, I was walking across Grafton Bridge, Auckland, New Zealand, in broad daylight, with people in front and behind me on the footpath. There are two guys, they look Maori, on the other side of the bridge, watching me. One is yelling at me over the traffic. I don't know them - I've never seen either of them before. They are dressed pretty shittily, they look like bums. Dirty clothes, short, and one guy had half his teeth missing and a crooked smile.

When I put my earphones back in and pretend to ignore the guy yelling at me, he signals to his friend, who runs across the road and stands in front of me. He's saying something and holding a plastic bag full of what certainly ain't oregano or thyme. I ignore him, and try to move past him. He has a look in his eyes which is familiar, that I've seen before. The look of somebody on P, methamphetamine, what the Aussies call "ice". The fucking stufff is sweeping the streets world-wide, NZ as much as anywhere else.

The guy keeps walking behind me, and grabs my collar, and tries to pull me into a wall. Of course, the other people on the footpath don't do jack shit - cowards. This guy isn't trying to sell me anything, he's agressive. He's either trying to get me to give him some money, or he wants a fight. I, of course, ain't giving him either. So, I shoulder him out of the way, take a few steps while staring him down, and then turn, and walk away calmly, with my earphones in my ears.

I don't know what the guy wanted, but, he sure as hell wasn't looking to make new friends or tell me about how Jezuz died for my sins.

The thing that really pisses me off, is that this isn't the first time this has happened. Bout 8 months ago, in the same area, A guy walks up to me, toptally from nowhere, and pushes me to the ground, standing over me with fists raised. I got away without getting in a fight, but, he was sure as hell looking for one. I'm pretty sure this guy was on P too. He was acting like it, and his eyes looked the same.

So, my question: What the hell is going on in these people's minds when they do shit like this? I mean... I'm not exactly the kind of guy who has "victim" stamped on my fourhead. I'm big, broad-shouldered, beard, hair tied back, and at the most recent of these two occaisions, I was wearing an army jacket. I didn't exactly look like easy pickings. And, on both occaisions I described above, all the guys involved were shorter than me, significantly so, and no way in hell were they stronger than me. What makes these people tick, why did they single me out? Because I looked like I would be a good fight, or what?

Does anyone have any similar experiences or ideas that could shed light on stupid shit like this, and how these idiots think?

A hospital next to my flat is the only one in the city that gives Methadone (a healthy drug replacement?) to junkies. So Every day I go to school and back there are about 50, looking like shit, with some angry dogs on chains, talking about complex world problems, drunk junkies asking for some money. And if you don't give any to them they follow you around

Crap, Blue! I'm glad you didn't have to get in a fight. It probably would have just provoked him even further, as I've heard that druggies don't actually respond to physical pain and basically just go until they physically can't.

..... and you have a beard? When did this happen? (Sorry, that was the first thing that came to mind )

      Oh SHIT!!!!

that guy was YOU!!!!!????!?!?!? !?!? O_O

      just kidding...

      but anyway:

dude, that's pretty damn fucked up (yes, i didn't *'ed it because this deserves to be written like that...)

      damn... hell...

well: if he did something like that, i think that in his head, something like this was going on:
      "GIVE ME MONAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!"

but that's just what i'm thinking...

about the alternate route to get to your destination: i'd walk the same path to get to your destination...
it tells them you don't give a shit: whatever they do, you can take 'em, you aren't afraid of them...

if someone is again assaulting you, and just won't stop, and it looks like you will get in a fight, aim for the chin... there's a nerve there called the "mandible nerve", that's connected to the nerves in the digestion system.
if it's struck, it sets off a chain reaction causing blood to rush through the abdomen, thus creating an oxygen shortage in the brain, so that you get knocked out... (if you think that's interresting then the REALLY interresting part is how fast it goes... (almost instantly))

there... my piece of advice may it come that far one day...

      Watch your back, dude...

Yeah, jaw shots are good. Kidneys are a bit tougher, but they'll double anybody over in pain pretty dang quick.

Anyway, to TBM, that totally bites. Good job at keeping a level head, though.

Whoa. No way, man. The last thing I want to do is get in a fight with somebody on P. That shit gives you inhuman strength, and pain resistance. Both guys were smaller than me, and if they hadn't been on P, I could have taken them, but, my general philosophy is that I don't fight unless my back is up against a wall. I'd rather back off and keep breathing.

Hehheh... I've always had a beard, Amé. For about two years now. I keep it pretty trimmed though, half an inch or an inch, and I shave the sides, so it's just on the bottom.

That's an old photo. It's slightly longer now, but not much.

I gotta agree with Ne-yo. He may have resistance to pain, but he's not immune to it. One thing about the Human body, even if you don't feel the pain, or the problems, they are still there and will affect you. You catch him hard enough in the head, he's going down regardless if he feels it or not.

And you would have been well within your rights of self defence to knock his sh** out.

well blue, sorry that had to happen to you.

crystal meth is probably the worst drug available worldwide...absolute fucking garbage...

as someone not prone to addiction which causes actions apart from my general principles, i can say that aside from heroin, meth is the only substance which risked destroying my life within a week or two.

      --------
one of my best friends in the world went through a year or two battle with it...when on it, an addict is no longer themself. they are capable of doing things which would shock them normally, all to get a fix.

i applaud your hesitance to fight..and it may sound brutal, but if ever one corners you, punch them in the throat as hard as you can...collapsing a meth-head's larynx is virtually the only way to escape.

      ---

do whatever you have to in order to walk away healthy and whole.

but aside from that, despite how hard it can be, remember that these people never chose to become what they have. they are as much victims as those they attack..perhaps worse, because they must live with themselves 24-7.

Wow Blue Close call, man. What if he had a weapon or something on him? You never know what someone like that would do.

Be careful... and use wombing's blow to the larynx if need be... -style.

man, bummer. Good thing you got away unharmed and unrobbed. I heard alot of bad shitI about P, or ice, or what you wanna call it. (Ironicly it sweeps the world, except the Netherlands, lol.)

Anyhow, I guess it is as bad a shit as heroin, becouse it creates that kind of dark-side hippies. Basicly just bums on crack that will kill someone when in a bad mode to get 10 bucks.

Actually since this silly drug (Seems a bit overrated to me) is so spread and there are so many addicts, the government should start programs to actually hand it out to certain addicts. I mean more then half of them probably isn't going to stop untill they are dead.

They do that with herion in the netherlands I think. It does help becouse then you don't get robbed on the streets by junkies, or at least a bit less.

      -

Hope you don't get mugged again. Keep up the don't fight but allso don't get robbed stuff you are pulling.

Methamphetamine is one of my pet hates.

IMHO, it's way, way worse than heroin. I mean... I was talking to a Crown Prosecutor (The equivalent in NZ of a District Attourney) who is fairly well-placed and respected, I've seen him in court - the guy is awesome. And, he said that over half of violent crime in NZ, he reckons, is connected with P. The shit is absolutely sweeping the streets. And the police are out giving f%$&ing speeding tickets, and the government's handing out unemployment benefits to people who use it for no other reason to fund their addictions? What a f$%&ing joke.

For those of you who have not been affected by this shit, I'm pretty convinced within the next 5 or 10 years, likely sooner, you will be. Screw bird flu and nuclear war. It's this kind of stupid f%&$ing self-inflicted shit that's going to kill off the human race.

Dude, I think you handled that situation exceptionally well.

I live in South Africa, which is a beautiful and amazing country, but unfortunately this kind of thing is very much a part of life.

Pretty much every person I know has been held at gun point, knife point, been hijacked or had people break into their home while they are sleeping. Some of them are no longer with us. I have rushed friends to hospital from situations like this, and I have been in crossfire myself. It does change how you view being alive quite a bit.

When I write all this down, it sounds kind of insane - I need to say that this not a daily occurance, you can live here quite happily without incident, but it is part of our lives. On average, 50 people are killed each day in South Africa through crime-related violence. You may or may not know (or be) one of those people. You kind of accept it, or are numb to it, I'm not sure.

I think most of the time, the people doing these things are desperate. They are trying to feed their families and survive. They take drugs so that it is easier to commit crimes, and the drugs destroy their humanity and their ability feel mercy. They become monsters.

An acquiantance of ours was recently killed by guys on Tic, which is also a meth-amphetamine, combined with other things I think. There was no reason to kill him - they had his car and his money, but they were out of their minds on drugs, so they did it anyway. It really upset me.

Knowing how to fight is fine, but when you are in a situation like Meanie was in, its very, very different to a movie.

What he did was exactly right, because he showed no weakness and walked away. The guy may have been armed, and if you strike back, he may pull the weapon. For us here, if you get attacked, you simply hand over whatever they want and hope you don't get killed anyway. I kind of laugh as I write that down, because I realize it sounds kind of , but its pretty much the way it is. lol

Its really not about bravado of any kind or being a ninja (thats what LDs are for&#33, its about remaining alive.

Having said all that - looking at your photo Meanie, I wouldn't f*@k with you at all.

Wow, there are drugs in Iran, too?
J/k blue, but wow, makes me realize how lucky I am. I have heard of one drug problem in my town in my life, (Some idiot trying to sell drugs in a school bathroom&#33 but nobody's actually been robbed. I think you handled the situation the best way possible - YOU didn't get stabbed, and nobody had to do any layrynx-punching. Might want to tread carefully, anyway.

Blue Meanie, I share your bemusement. Whilst I've never been assaulted or mugged, I have cerebral palsy and therefore walk with a noticeable gait, and I get perfect strangers take the piss out of and hurl abuse at me in public places all the time and I've never understood why they think it necessary to do so.

Oh, man, that sucks. I know how that is, I have a cousion with the same condition. In reality she's a wealthy lawyer in London, a junior partner of a large law firm, but she too has a noticeably odd walk, and there's something weird with her left side...

And tai: I have to say, that's not the first time I've heard such things about South Africa.

Because they want to: a) Feel good about them selves, or feel powerfull, bigger thus attacking people who seem week.
      b) Proove themselves to somebody else, to be accepted in some sort of a group. I myself am amazed at how weekminded people are in the world and see how we are far from being the "ultimate race" or "super civilised".
      c) Something else. I really don't know, I just typed the stuff up there because I think I got it all figured out . Just my theoryes and are probably true.
