Only asking college grads here. I can't help but to worry.

What was your final GPA and did you land a good job with it?

I'm starting to worry slightly, because after my first year in mechanical engineering, I only managed a 2.8 cumalative (first semester was a 2.7, second one was a 2.9), and right now, I think if the semster ended right now, I'd have a 3.32 - I feel I can end this semster as high as 3.67 (if everything goes right, I'll be praying), but also as low as another 2.8 or so (I'll go fucking insane if I do, I put to much work into this semster to get below 3.0).

I graduated with a 3.85 cumulative GPA through my entire college degree, which is high honors. But as long as you get a 3.0 or above, you'll still graduate with honors. But honestly, I don't think employers really concentrate on your exact graduating GPA when selecting someone for a job - they mostly look to make sure you have the degree. But the more you can put on your resume (like graduating with honors) it may improve your chances of landing the job - especially if you have any experience in the field.

IMO, most of the college experience of life lessons is to deal with all the crap - like registration screw-ups, classes you need being full and trying to get added, transferring credits, financial aid, loans, etc. I think they make it difficult on purpose to teach people how to deal with stress!

What's the difference between university and college?

Not to scare you but college GPA does matter somewhat depending on what type of work you're looking for. It definitely matters if you're trying to get into grad/professional school. However if you can pull off above a 3.0 you should be okay in general.

Yes, if you're applying for grad school, your ungrad GPA definitely matters. But he was asking about graduating GPA and going straight into the job market after undergrad so that's what I was referring to - in which case a 3.0 or higher is suffice.

Yeah I am probably not going to grad school unless whatever job I apply for wants me to (and also pays for it )

I wish I could go back and re-do that first year... to much partying, to much doing nothing, not enough focusing on work. Oh well, I guess we all need to learn from mistakes some way.

Edit: I too would like to know this University/College GPA thing. Do you mean like regular community colleges being easier then university so your GPA would just be naturally higher? I like to look at other easier majors and think if I took those how my GPA would look, because mine is one of the more difficult you can take

I use the word 'college' to describe ungrad education - I think non-Americans call it 'university' instead of 'college.'
To me, it's all the same - it's all undergrad education.

I finished an Arts & Science program at college with a 92% average. No GPA was given to me because I suppose the Canadian college's work on a different system (which is pretty silly).

The high grade only landed me into university with a lousy low paying job.. hurrah.

I finished my MBA program with a 3.80 GPA. But, I found it easier to get A's & B's in an advanced degree program than undergrad (or maybe I was partying less and trying harder...).

I just happened to go to "My Posts", went to the very last page, and stumbled upon this.

I cannot believe it's been over a year since I made this post. Time is going by way to quickly. Since I have made this post, over the three semesters that have passed, I've gotten a 3.3 , 3.6, and 3.912 - I'm due for a 4.0 next semester. I finally have my shit together. My cumulative average has gone up from a 2.8 after the first year to 3.32 present time. I finally feel "ok", not totally, but better, with seeing my GPA on my resume. My "core" GPA (actual required MAE classes) is about 3.5, because I didn't have any the first year.

If I keep up I should graduate with over a 3.5 - no... not should, WILL.

Three semesters to go! (Though it might more depending on weather or not I stay an extra year and go for a physics major along with the MAE)

Can anybody explain how GPA grading works? Over here we just use percentile averages and something called "la Cote R".

At least in college/university, you receive so many credits for a class. Your grade corresponds with a number on a 0-4 scale. 0 = F, 1 = D, 2 = C, 3 = B, and 4 = A. For a particular class, each credit is worth between 0-5 points, so to speak, and you multiply that by the number of credits points that the class is worth. As you take more credits, you accumulate more credit points. Then, at the end of the quarter/semester/four years, those credit points are divided into the total amount of credit points possible to get one's Grade Point Average.

      Here's an example:
      You get a B in a class that's worth 4 credits. B=3, so 3x4=12 credit points out of a possible 16. You get an A in a class that's worth 3 credits. A=4, so 4x3=12 credit points out of a possible 16. You then get a D in a class that's worth 5 credits. D=1, so 1x5=5 out of a possible 20.

      12 + 12 + 5 = 29 credit points out of a possible 52 points = 1.79 GPA, or a C-.

I think I graduated with a 3.72 or something. Almost high honors, but I didn't want to write that 8 page essay in Russian

I'm in my second year and i've got a 3.5 cumulative. I wish i could do better, as who knows if Med schools will be happy with a 3.5, but i'm gonna pwn the MCAT.

      Burns - 3.85? I'm impressed!

A University is a higher education school with both an Undergraduate and a Graduate program. A College is a higher education school with only an Undergraduate program. I go to a College and am going to go to Med school, a graduate progam. I'm hoping for U of M - i got accepted there for undergrad but went to a better school, also Med schools like seeing people in their grad programs that went to other schools.

3.95 on my undergrad. I got to wear the gold tassles! If minor degrees count, I have two of those with 4.0's.

As far as landing a good job, believe it or not that wasn't why I finished my education. Being primarily self-employed, I just gave myself a nice healthy percentage raise (what's 200% of zero again?) and went on my merry way.

It was satisfying indeed - especially after barely graduating high skrewl.

      I miss college.

Finish college? What a foolish thing to do.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I wish more people cared about what you majored in rather than your GPA. My friend majored in freakin' folklore, where she basically read stories and wrote papers on them, and got like a 3.8 or something. My other friend majored in Japanese and got a similar GPA. Japanese. Great. Especially since she went into the major already practically fluent in the language because of her extensive study abroad experience in Japan. My GPA at the moment is like a 3.2, and I've had to work my ass off taking some of the most challenging classes known to man. I've also worked the entire time I've been at college. Given what I've been through, I'm proud of my GPA.

I don't know if I will end up going to grad school.. I definitely hope to, since I really value higher education. Before applying though, I hope to do something spectacular like the peace corps or something like that, because it might be tougher for me to get in.

So uhhh I digressed. The point that I originally wanted to make was that you should do your best to keep your GPA above a 3.0 After that, it really doesn't matter in terms of looking for a job. I've had a gazillion interview offers already. If you get the interview offer, you know that you're good enough for them on paper. The rest is up to what you've learned, the skills you can offer, and your personality. If you have a low-ish GPA and want to go to grad school, do something extra that might set you apart from other applicants. Do some internships, get a lot of work experience, etc.

College is the only time in your life you'll actually experience living the way you do. Sure, school comes first, but everyone wants to live the college lifestyle too -- you'll never be able to do it again!

Had to find this post because wow... I am done!. Leaving with a 3.55 cumulative and 3.70 in my major. Huge turn around from my freshman year.

While true, I'm honestly not too bummed about leaving college. While the amount of house parties I attend will drop significantly, working 8 hours a day (the worst part of it since 8 hours is a long time), being active for an hour or two at the gym, and then spending the nights going out with no exams or homework to worry about, I'm ready to keep having a good a time.

      Congrats!!

Love how you guys are so obsessed over there with 'higher' education. Never went onto university and still have a much better and higher paid job than any of my friends who went to university and graduated wetc.... The system works LOL.
