Online DV Chat Lecture - Interested?

      O'nus DV Chat Lecture/Mentor:
      Logical Fallacies

      Proposed dates:
      18th
      19th
      21st
      25th
      26th
+ General times are aimed at 8pm, EST (north american). Specific dates depend on respones.

We will be discussing logical fallacies and their common usages. Such fallacies include:
      - Ad hominem
      - Appeal to tradition
      - Begging the question
      - Straw man
      and more.

      Format will go:
      - Title of Fallacy
      - Question to audience; ie. sample and analysis
      - Explanation of fallacy
      - Examples of common usage.

Depending on interest, this could turn into a series as there are many fallacies.

Are you interested? What time works for you? Please respond even if you are not sure of a time so that I can gauge general interest.

Note: I am also looking for someone to make minutes of the discussion. Anyone who is willing to record the discussion while participating (or just record), please contact me.

I`ll check it out if I`m available, but it better be interesting, because "a good lecture" is an oxymoron to me ...

Oh, and you can record the chat log, it`s one of the buttons in there.

Well Mes maybe some people just like to sit and listen( well read n this case) to new and interesting information.

However is this just a lecture or also a civilized debate/questioning session on the topic as well?

I think he just wants to make the chat a more "civilized" environment.

Of all the places apt for serious debate, DV chat is not one of them.

In fact, it's not fit for any purpose.

      Give us IRC now!

I'm an honours associative student right now going for masters and whatever else is available to me. I have held labs and tutorial sessions in various topics such as the following:
      - Logic
      - Behavioural research
      - Cognitive psychology
      - Developmental psychology
      - Philosophy of the mind
      - Existentialism

I am a psychology/philosopher specialising in these specifics:
      - Psychology: Cognitive/Developmental
      - Philosophy: Existentialism/Logic

I have also been an executive member of a debate club recognized by CUSID.

Furthermore, the purpose of this is not to change DV chat or anything, but simply discuss logical fallacies and their usages. The purpose is enlightenment - for all involved.

As a note.. I do not know what IRC is, so I can not use it..

You idiot, we've been doing it like this for years. Do you really think we need a fool to tell us stupid things? I really don't think any of us are interested to hear some fool copy and pasting Wikipedia articles about things we already know just to annoy us.

i don't understand why everyone is being so mean...

and Mark75( i really don't understand your gender symbol, was it not male a while back, transsexual, mistake?) i thought you weren't so flameyish...

We haven't had many replies yet O'Nus, other people might be interested in your lectures. Though i suggest you let others speak a little, maybe you could introduce a topic and people could discuss it after you have talked for a little.

^ Totally! I think a discussion about these various topics is a great idea. Or an involved type of lecture.

Wow, possibly the perfect demonstration of someone who needs a lesson in logic. Not a simple cogent sentence in it.

I am not aiming at a pretentious over-tone. I have conducted seminars in logic and am willing to share the content online. If you are so conditioned to "know-it-alls" dwelling their knowledge over you and this is how you respond, then I am inclined to wonder why you respond so strongly.

I would never use wikipedia. It is a foolish source not recognized in any academic world. The only online source I use is:
      http://plato.stanford.edu/
+ I suggest you explore it before making smug remarks.

      More specifically:
      - What have you been doing for years?
      - What is it that are "stupid things"? Logic?
      - How am I a fool?
      - Can you demonstrate how you already "know" logic when you obviously have not practiced any logical cogent arguements in that post whatsoever.

I do not understand the tension against this. I am offering a discussion and my experience at mentoring logic. We could easily change the subject to something else, if you would prefer.

      Other topic ideas:
      - Biopsychology
      - Neuropharmacology
      - Developmental psychology; ie. age groups and fundamentals

On that note, please direct malingering, capricious, cretinous, malicious, comments to another dismal toilet of the world where you can expel such thoughtless spew where it will be appreciated. Pillock.

I'll come if I'm not too busy; it sounds like a good auxiliary skill to have when debating.

I think that if there's any maliciousness toward you O'nus, it's because of the way you present your material.. it's very, I don't know, cold and business-like. We're too used to having people be open and casual around here I guess.

I doubt that there is a large number of people who are already interested in those subjects.. and if you want to make them interested, you have to introduce them in a way that captivates people.

Meh. You just gotta be casual. Type the way you would talk to a buddy. At least in a forum such as this, that gets a wider range of audience interested. Although who knows, I might be the only one here thinking this.

In any case, none of those dates work for me because I have two exams that won't end until the 27th. But if you continue to do these, I will definitely come to one after that.

      Definitly.

I think I choose the wrong title as "lecture" is not what I am intending. It is a misnomer of my intention. I would much rather a discussion as they are much more enlightening.

However, I do not think I can change the thread title now..?

Not like you asked my opinion, but she's right. To make friends make yourself friendly. So far you've come across as totally unrelatable.

I remember studying logical fallacies back in high school. I remember the names, but forget examples of some of them. I love post hoc ergo propter hoc (I forget the spelling).

I'd attend, but different time zones means it'll most likely be on sometime when I'm sleeping or at work.
