If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it really matter?

i don't know probably not.

i just got a new one: a pipe, a couple of pebbles and a carrot are lying in a field by each other. how did they get there?

Wow, dunno that one... but about the tree falling, yes it matters, at least to all the little squirrels who got squished.

A man walks into a building and begins to wander around. After a few moments, someone hears a firecracker go off. A moment or two later, smoke can be smelled, and the fire department is called.

What caused the fire, and did the man in question have anything to do with it?

Well it seems you change perspectives after the first sentence. My guess is the obvious-- the man walked in and set the firecracker that started the fire.

Is he an old man on oxygen who lit a cigarette and blew up his tank?

I don't know what jacobo is talking about, but all I can gather from that statement is that the old man didn't hear the firecracker go off himself. He must be deaf...
