Dream Views Guitar Wars - Week 6: Cast Your Votes NOW!!!

Right, to start off, for every viewer who does not vote, a puppy will cry. So there, let a puppy cry or vote. These threads are getting way too many views and hardly any votes, we need your votes so we can make this extra competitive

      Ok, so the task for this week was;

      Task

Recreate an existing piece, but in a different style. The obvious route for this is to get the chord structure to the piece of music and then change them to fit another style whilst still retaining the original melody.
Please bare in mind that this was not completely strict and was fairly flexible and as a result produced some damn good entries. Here they are below.

      Oneiro's entry:

[Edit: Oh, and nice to have another person in the mix, RedDeath9! Good luck.]

      Tornado Joe's entry:

So this challenge presented me with a chance to connect with this song again on a more personal level.

As far as style, I originally had one in mind - then by accident I discovered another type of sound that thought about doing. I couldn't choose between which I liked better, so I came up with a third piece that sort of combines both.

I chose to slow the song down and modify the chords while trying tt stick to the general direction of the original melody. I also cut it down from it's original version to keep it short and to the point as possible.
I apologize for the singing, it would pretty much be just rhythm without it.

I thought some of you might want to see how long it takes you to figure out what it is so I won't give away the title. Tornado Joe's DV Guitar wars submission.

Here's the link to the original piece.

I hope this challenge gets run again some time. It is a great idea and I have a few that would have been wonderful... if I wasn't trapped taking care of my mom. It has not been a good week for music production or anything else for that matter.

And I can't even listen right now. I'll come back tomorrow, hopefully, and cast my vote. I'm REALLY looking forward to hearing these! (I decided to forego listening as the entries came in this time.)

Don't you worry, it will be, i had an idea which expanded on this idea a little further, a bit more detail in fact, one i think that you may like, i think this will be coming up in a couple weeks time. Lets just say that we may have the opportunity to do a bit of multi-tracking in this idea

      I said too much...

I voted for T Joe's because it was amazing. It's sounded like a professional recording and was very nicely arranged.

      Ahh! I'm stuck.

I'll go for TJ this time though...sounds very professional. Nice vocals too.

I wish there had been more entries. The variety is amazing and wonderful. Makes picking one even harder than usual.

Oneiro - that's some sweet chord-melody work... one of the most challenging guitar styles there is and one I'm working diligently on learning right now. I would love to hear that on a classical or jazz guitar, or just with a straight, clean tone.

Oneironaut - great blending of chords and melody there! That was the spirit of the Blues challenge that was shelved (and that I hope gets resurrected soon, as I've already done my entry for it.) Wonderful song, great twist on it!

Tornado Joe - yow. GREAT to hear your voice! Man... we need to find a way to get together for a day or a weekend and make some music. You and I are on the same page in so many ways. Fun choice of songs and sweet arrangement and execution. As always, your guitar tone makes me drool.

Oneiro gets my vote this time. Great job everybody!

Thanks very much pj.. much appreciated.

Why I chose to do it overdriven was that LS had said that the song reworked should be in a different style. I tried it clean with chorus, and although it sounded very pretty, it wasn't really in any style at all.. so, wanting to adhere as closely as possible to the rules of the week, I tried it overdriven, and it sounded like slow rock to me. That's why I did it like I did.

Thanks, pj. Looking back, I wish I would have taken a little more time to polish it up. Picking this song was a last-minute switch from another song that I'd chosen that I wasn't really feeling. I still had a good day or two to perfect this one, but I called it "done" kinda early. Oh well, though.

Ah, here's the thread (thought we were going to keep using the same thread from last challenge).

      Ok,

Oneiro - Very nice! Really enjoy that open, dreamy sound. I liked how I'd be thrown off by your changes to the notes. Since the song was familiar, I'd anticipate what was coming up, but then - bam! Surprise! Nice

Oneironaut - Thanks for exposing me to this song, I never had heard of it. It's got a really nice easy going but emotionaly engaging rhythm. Your piece turned it up that notch or two, twisting the emotional just tight enough to heart wretching anger! Bwaha! Hey, I'd really like to hear you add just one more layer to this - the vocal part. Not saying you have to sing (though that could rock!), but at least with the guitar as a lead melody.

Ok, now, for the sake of the puppies I will cast my vote: Oneiro!

However, it would have been nice to have at least another 3 or 4 submissions. It feels more like I'm rejecting one over the other and that is soooo not the case It was probably that Oneiro's piece came across more complete because of the melody kinda peeking through. Oneironaut's was just as up to par, it's the gaps where the melody was missing that drew unwanted attention.

Tj you have my vote. The change between rock and soft slow acoustic was great. Also, I enjoyed the vocals as they really defined your piece and drew me in. Congrats.

Nothing personal Oneiro/naut, you guys did just as well. Maybe sing for me next time. Heh, just kidding.

Joe got my vote this time. That was just amazing, man. Absolutely amazing. I loved it!

Oneiro, just not really my thing, sorry.

Oneironaut, I love what you did with that song, man! I could definitely recognize it, and it worked very well. Very well.

First off, congratulations on the win, man. Your entry really was great.

And yeah, I think I'll do some more with this one. I feel I kinda sold myself short on it, so I'd like to add some more and see what I can do. I doubt I'll be singing, heh, but yeah, I'll probably do the vocal melody with the guitar, and play the rhythm on another track.

Wow, what a great way to start the morning! Thanks, Oneironaut!

I'd like to thank ALL the votes that came into this thread - we cannot let kittens rule the planet!!

AND, of course, a special thanks to those who voted for me

Oneiro, sorry you had to go through so much to finally hear my piece. Thanks for not giving up! PJ, I'd definitely be up for a jam session sometime - hey, maybe there's a way to do so via the interwebz? Oneiro, Xox, ColdBlooded, glad you liked the vocals. I'm one of those people who cringes at the sound of my own voice - it just sounds awkward to me on playback. I hear it's common with a lot of people, though. It's rare that I'll lay down a vocal track on a piece of mine, this was a special case.

Now, let's get some more participants for the upcoming challenges!
