President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president.

The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive," with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive, establishes under the office of president a new National Continuity Coordinator.

That job, as the document describes, is to make plans for "National Essential Functions" of all federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president's directives in the event of a national emergency.

The directive loosely defines "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

so technically, the president can now declare a state of emergency like Musharraf did, and have total Dictatorial power of the united states...

That means all federal state local and even tribal governments under the control of ONE MAN, King George, and to top it off, he will control the private sector also with this state of emergency...

is it me, or does this scare anyone else to death?

so say john mccain loses, the republicans lose the white house, I have a terrible feeling this emergency power will be used.

Normally I'd chalk this up to paranoia, but if anyone would attempt this sort of monkey-business, it would be Bush/Cheney. So yes, I'm a little scared. Just watch out if some sort of emergency situation starts building in the next nine months. Like, say, with Iran.

oh yea I know that, I'm just putting it out there for people who didn't know, cause its FUCKING SCARY, to me atleast.

the scariest part about this is, that the next president has this power also.

so if bush doesn't, mccain would, or who knows maybe the dems would.

but, if anyone hears the words state of emergency, pack your bags, and lets all gtfo of america cause I don't want to be trapped here under a dictatorship.

We The People lost almost 100 years ago when the rockefellers, warburgs, and morgans passed the federal reserve act of 1913 during christmas break in congress, when most members of congress are on vacation.

that was the beginning of what we see today, super-inflation, weak economy, people being forclosed, veterans denied health care, senior citizens retirement cash dissapearing, social security money vanishing.......

the list goes on...

It doesn't seem to me like the American people would just sit still and let it happen, he's only one man, surely we can just get red of him if we don't like him, it would take him longer then that, inless he uses some kind of threat that you cannot critizise him.

He's not just one man. Since he was elected he's been appointing all of his close friends to cabinet positions, even those with little to no experience. Anyone remember "Great job, Brownie!"?

they will, because most americans are so brainwashed by the whole terrorism and war on terror propaganda, they will trust that he will 'keep us safe'

Lets see, the american people sat by, while he went to war illegally in iraq, lied to us all, and refuses to listen to withdraw, if the people sit around for that, im sure they are going to sit around when this state of emergency gets declared.

Sorry for my pessimism but, i doubt anyone would do anything.
