      Rave/Techno/House Music

Anyone know any good stuff that you can just go out of your mind and dance like a retard to? Like daft punk (stuff like "one more time" is good heh). Post your favorites (links to the actual songs if you could too). I kind of want to have a rave so need to find some sweet songs that can get the vibe going.

I heard Aphex Twin is good, and I like Juno Reactor a lot. Also check some movie music.

Find Daft Punk Alive 1997, a 45 minute live track--killer.
Underworld: Pearl's Girl, Cowgirl, Two Months Off
      Modeselektor: Dancing Box

Of course, if you really want to have a rave, you need DJs with decent records and some technical skills, but if you just want to have some friends over or a school dance or something of that sort, then any of the above should help out.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Just out of curiosity, what does a DJ do that I couldn't do?

Have shit-tons of records that they know backwards and forwards, experience reading crowds, technical skills like mixing, fading, and smooth transitions, and sets of varying lengths consisting of multiple tracks from multiple records.

If you want to take up DJing, go ahead and get started, but realize that your level of skill right now is unconscious incompetence: you don't know what you don't know. My own knowledge of DJing just verges on conscious incompetence; having worked with DJs of varying skill levels, listened in on their conversations and talked music with DJs and DJ enthusiasts, I have some idea of the skills I don't have, but consider the above only a partial list. The main thing that separates a good DJ from any schmuck with some mp3s is figuring out which one of his/her records will get a specific crowd on a specific night out on the floor.

That said, don't let it stop you from throwing a party and trying to get people dancing

True I don't have those skills. But I have a feeling that a bunch of people tripping out on whatever wouldn't notice if there is no "mixing, fading, and smooth transitions"

Oh they will notice. Believe it or not, people tripping or rolling run on music. So, when the flow gets interrupted, it feels like somebody kicking you in the stomach. Lol. (They don't call bad mixes "train wrecks" for nothing. That's what it feels like. )

I like house music, but I really like breakbeats a lot more. The deciding factor for me is that you can take any house or trance song, take out the repetitive "boom boom boom boom" straight-beat, add a badass breakbeat behind it, and instantly have a song that's 1000x better, but that's just me.

Here are some of my own mixes. They're filled with some really dope tracks, if you wanna give 'em a shot. There's a little something for everybody, in each of them:

      http://www.megaupload.com/?d=I5IMLXFR
Mostly badass nu skool breaks. A couple of soft-toned tracks, but pretty hardcore beats, for the most part.

      http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IS5N38IU
More or less the same style as the first. Nothing all that spacey, just some really dope shit to dance to.

      http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LFCKP522
This one is more spacey. Should be particularly popular to anyone tripping or rolling on anything. There are still a couple of hard-ass beat tracks on this one, but, for the most part, they are softer-synth tracks set to breaks. Check this thread for a list of what tracks are on it, and for a streaming sample, so you don't have to wait until it's downloaded to hear what it sounds like. The mixing on a few songs is kind of rough, because I mix better on turntables, and I didn't have any for this set. It's not that bad, though.

A few more artists/songs you might want to look into:

The Crystal Method - (The entire Vegas album is legendary in the club scene)
Sasha and Digweed - Northern Exposure (entire album)
Hybrid - Basically anything mixed by them. Their Wide Angle album is one of my favorite albums. Check out tracks like "Body Rock," "Accelerator," "Symphony," "Cafe Del Mar remix," ....uh...that's all I can think of off the top of my head, but basically get anything from Hybrid.
DJ Rob E - Orlando Breaks vol 1 and 2 - Again; Legendary.
Adam Freeland - Anything he touches is awesome. Just grab various tracks by him and find what you like.
BT - "Godspeed (Hybrid Mix)", "Somnambulist", Uh....anything by BT really.

That's all I can really think of, for now. If anything else comes up, I'll add to the list. When are you planning on having this party?

I'm into techno rave but it still depends on what you like. I would suggest Scooter, DJ Dean or DJ Splash cos they're my favorite artists. If you're looking for a more moshish rave though I'd suggest Pendulum's "Blood Sugar". You can really go insane to that!

Oh, and if you'll be anywhere near a big screen (or even a somewhat big screen), throw some eye-candy on it like Advent Children or something, with the sound muted. One thing trippers and/or rollers love is when badass music syncs up with badass visuals, and it never fails with stuff like that.

Yeah, I used to dj from 94 - 2001. mostly playing breaks, techno, house and progressive trance. Unfortunately... although I love my appreciation and knowledge for electronic I have 10 crates of records just sitting there.

      what a shame!

There are many sub-genres to electronic dance music. It's all I really listen to these days. I'm currently into progressive and electro house. I'll always love trance music though.

Just to name a few groups I really like:

Sasha, Iio, Gabriel & Dresden, Deep Dish, Kaskade, Way Out West, Trentemoller, Ferry Corsten, Starkillers, Satoshi Tomie, Crystal Method, Oakenfold, PvD

I know, sorta mainstream but whatever.
