Now this guy has got the right idea!

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPACOUNTY SHERIFF ( ARIZONA) AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

These are some of the reasons why:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the 'tent city jail' to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison complex.
He has jail meals down to 20 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but 'G' movies. He says:
'They're in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assaultinnocent people when they leave.'
He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer's money.
Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued fordiscrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel, he replied: 'So these morons will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.'
He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he toldthem, 'This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back.'
He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd2007), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbedwiresurrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to theirgovernment-issued pink boxer shorts.
On theWednesday, hundreds of men wearing pink boxer shorts were overheardchatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.
'This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,' said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2years with 10 more to go. 'It's inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. 'Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things many taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.'
The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: 'It's between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!'

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

Sounds like my kind of Sheriff! I bet those who get paroled don't commit crimes back in his jail's district.

That is EXACTLY what all prisons should be like. Even here in Canada where it gets deathly cold in the winter.

I think all criminals should have to eat their feces in public, then have rotten fruits thrown at them while wearing each others old soiled panties on their heads, then live in a blackbox for 4 weeks, only to be forced to work in labor camps for 18 hours a day afterwards and then be publicly stoned to death while having to look at pictures of their parents.

Never mind human rights, criminal scum is subhuman waste and deserves punishment.

Edit: Criminals should also be forced to drink each others piss on film and have the tapes aired on national television and sent to their relatives. (Just thought this was pretty good as well.)

Also, they shouldn't be allowed to talk and there should be no toilets, just paper bags in each cell.

THIS is exactly what all prisons should be like.

In Britain, there is a big problem with overcrowded prisons. The fact is, prison is cushy. For many criminals, prison is not a deterrent, and some even want to go there.

Prison is about making criminals suffer, and keeping them from society. This guy definitely has the right idea. Also, prisons should have gigantic hamster wheels hooked up to electric generators. This would solve our energy needs - and it's definitely renewable.

I had a idea similar to that (only using elementary/middle school-aged kids), but that works just as well! They could, at the very least, pay their own electricity bill.

I think that this is fair. I know that there's the possibility that some people in jail are innocent, so they're still being treated humanely; they simply have no material comforts or amenities.

However, ugh! The Disney Channel! That is borderline torture

Yeah... imagine being locked up for 10 years, with just the disney channel. Now you've got pissed off criminals getting released back into society. Not good.

I agree with this full heartedly and feel that if you commit a crime against your society then you should sure as hell better not suck that same society dry of its resources. In fact you should work to pay your own way as well as support your local town/city to pay for your crime.

I do not however feel that if one was caught for smoking a joint, or something as harmless, should be jailed at all because they didn't hurt society for doing it. We have many people in prison for just such reasons, should we make them work for free and live like our ancestors did just for getting high? So there are some exceptions that should be considered, or at least I think so.

      The link didn't work.

Crimes that warrant prison is up for debate, but for those who are sentenced to prison, this is the way to go. Slapping a dollar amount for the defendant to repay doesn't do anything if that person doesn't have any and/or doesn't plan on paying it back. Hard labor that does something for society and the people they've wronged is fitting retribution.

I think they should just not do it again.

Maybe if they were made to promise not to by a judge or a policeman or something they wouldn't reoffend.

Then everyone would be happy and we wouldn't need prisons.

      Sorted.

Sorry to burst your bubble but i live in maricopa county, and I think he's the worst sherrif ever, there are 60,000 felons loose on the streets, and he goes after illegal immagrants, meanwhile 60,000 felons are loose, and none of the warrants are being enforced.

he is filling our prisons with illegals, wasting our tax dollars on non us citizens, while real us citizen felons are loose in phoenix, SIXTY THOUSAND.

I hate to disagree with you all but, he's a psycho and should goto his prison himself and see how humane it is, he has had inmates murdered by his guards, and had the evidence removed and was proven 'innocent'

If anyone is a criminal, its this guy.

I just had this rad idea, maybe we can cut off the arms and legs of criminals and feed them to racehorses (and also defecate into their wounds afterwards). That way at least they

      (1) contribute something to society,
      (2) can't commit crimes again
      (3) and still get to live.

Man, I should totally be in charge of prisons.

Until you live in maricopa county, you don't know his rule here, I was pulled over by one of his sherrif 'posse' members last year, I was going about 10 mph over the speed zone, he reported I went 25 mph over, and said im lucky I'm not going to tent city.

That's right, they send people to tent city for speed violations, and other nonsense like that, most prisoners in that jail are in there because of being caught with a controlled substance, aka drugs.

Non violent drug users fill that prison, along with illegal immigrants, and we pay tax dollars so sherrif joe can have his wild west chain gang with illegals and potheads...what a good fucking use of tax dollars!

Not only that, his sherrifs racially profile, they pull over hispanics and blacks more then anyone else, its no secret...the mayor of phoenix himself has launched an investigation courtesy of the department of justice, to get sherrif joe caught, doing his dirty racial profiling and illegal searches, he kicks down doors without warrants, he also wanted to do this:

He wanted to setup multiple checkpoints around phoenix, to randomly pull over ANYONE and search their car and tear it apart, without any probable cause whatsoever....thankfully his lawyers reminded him what the constitution of the fucking united states is.

Yea, sherrif joe is real wonderful....

Why don't you try moving out here and get pulled over by crooked sherrifs, get sent to this jail, and see how much you like it.

Criminals are still human beings, they shouldn't be treated this way in America of all fucking countries, we believe in human rights and dignity in the human spirit, not embarrasing inmates with pink underwear and 130+ degree inhumane conditions.

Alright, maybe you can answer this for me, Guerilla, because you live there. Why the fuck do we still have sherrifs? I thought they went extinct along with the haberdasher. Don't you have like a police force or something? This isn't the frontier or the wild west. What does a sherrif do that is different than what a police officer would do? Does he wear a cowboy hat? If so, then I think I found the difference.

While he has a decent idea, that criminals are treated too well right now.

There are many so called crimes that he puts in Tent City that don't deserve this kind of treatment.

There's a 50+ year old man in Joe Arpaio's jail right now who was recently sentenced to 15 years for growing medicinal marijuana for his very sick wife, himself and two friends who also needed it.
This man and others like him shouldn't have to suffer like that for no reason.
Arpaio is ridiculously hard when it comes to drug(especially marijuana) "offenders and criminals" and that's bullshit.

He's got an army of paid PR workers to keep the ignorant public from knowing about his bullshit so he can get reelected.

Fuck you, Joe Arpaio, you crooked, racist, fascist, asshole, piece of shit.

Well, we have Phoenix police, scottsdale police, mesa...chandler....etc

We have regular cops, sheriffs here are technically like state troopers, but for the county ya know?

There are not real state troopers here, so they use sheriffs for each county here in Arizona.

Also listen to this, the sheriffs and regular cops HATE each other here, the sheriff himself said he was going to do a crime sweep somewhere, aka racial profile latinos...and he did not tell the police where he would do this sweep because the cops know he is breaking the rules, and they can't stop him.

      The mayor can't stop him..

Yesterday I saw a "Viva sheriff joe" sticker on a car, i felt like running him off the road for supporting that dictator.

I don't understand how these phoenix dickheads keep voting for him.

While I think cushy jails are a very bad idea, his version is just many, many times worse. All this person cares about is the power he feels over his inmates. What a sad excuse for a human being.

Don't get me wrong... I don't think prisoners should get cable or fancy meals either. They are there to be punished. But he is setting people up for extreme emotional and possibly physical damage that will far outlive their sentences. The purpose of setting a sentence length is so that someone who serves that length of time is supposed to have paid their debt to society. In this guy's world, that debt is never repaid, no matter what their crime was.

There are going to be some seriously deranged ex-cons roaming about his county in search of some revenge blood eventually.

you hit the nail on the head, he has multiple death threats from criminals that got out, treating them like dirt won't rehabilitate or stop them from commiting further crimes. If anything this treatment makes them want to commit more crimes due to their literal torture in his prison.

I don't think they deserve cushy beds or cable or anything but, a decent temperature building, say 85 degrees and real beds not tents, and no chain gangs, and no pink underwear.

It's a shock how he hasn't been assassinated yet.

Well actually, he has multple body guards, he knows hes a wanted man.
