I think that's so unfair the way employers ask what you expect to be paid. Cheap bastards are just looking for some dumb shmuck who will let themselves get taken advantage of. |

I might work from 3:30 AM to 11:30 AM at a local convenience store opening up and all that jazz. What type of salary should I expect/ask for? I have an "interview" this coming week; if they ask me what I think a fair wage would be, what should I say? I wouldn't do it for less than 10 dollars an hour, but I can't imagine the would pay me more than 12 dollars an hour (though I searched online and some stuff said 13-14 dollars?). Any ideas? As of now I will tell them that I think 10-12 dollars an hour would be fair. |

Wrong. If you don't have your own rate, your own appraisal of your skills and what you have to offer your employer (in monetary terms), then that only shows your lack of confidence and coherence when it comes to acquiring a job. |
|
You failed to mention where you are being hired. |

---o--- my DCs say I'm dreamy.
Minimum wage in Ontario, Canada is $9.50. |
|
Vermont. Minimum wage = $8.06. I want to say 12 dollars, but I'm afraid that's too much. I won't do it for less than 10 though. |
|
Say 12, consider it 10 + a 2 hour premium for working a GY shift. |
|
Unless there is a whole ton of applicants, don't be afraid to put it a bit high $12-13. They're more likely to just say something like "We can't afford to hire someone for $13 an hour, how would you feel working for $11.50?" or "We'll have to start you at $XX and see how you do". |
|
Maybe, just for a second, you'll be awestruck.
...do you feel it to?
They told me 8.25 (and its a corporation so that won't change). I don't think I can do that. I mean, it's the worst possible shift (saturdays and sundays 330-1130 am) and they are offering me 19 cents above minimum wage? I have some interviews on thursday for other jobs... I am not sure if I am going to do this so I at least get some extra cash. I'll have to see... |
|
For jobs at this level, the "expected wages" line is just a formality. You're going to make what they tell you you're going to make. |
|
I thought it was a bit unrealistic to expect a starting salary of 12 dollars an hour working as a convenience store clerk. My business partner and I just hired a person to answer our phones and makes calls for us and her starting salary is $7.00 /hour. Things will be different after the probationary period but $12.00 /hour as a convenient store clerk? Cheeahh... |

Things are not as they seem
Oh the Graveyard shift...It used to be my favorite shift when I worked in the Hotel... 11pm - 7am. I spent a lot of my time talking to the other staff, wondering the halls, and sampling the various treats in the pastry kitchen. |

That may very well be a good thing to pursue in the future, but where will the money to start said business come from? As much some people may wish it, money doesn't just fall out of their ass. Everyone's gotta start somewhere - and that somewhere is usually minimum wage. I say just take it. |

"Take atheism, for example. Not a religion? Their pseudo-dogmatic will to convert others to their system of beliefs is eerily reminiscent of the very behavior they criticize in the religious."
Don't listen to the people telling you to 'just take it.' If you are not going to be happy making those wages, don't accept a job making those wages. In this day and age, you'd barely break even with that wage, even with few expenses, unless it was a second job. I make $10 and hour at my main job, but I work so few hours most weeks it really doesn't cut it. Luckily I have other opportunities for income through freelance work. |

I agree with this man! He has it spot on! Why wouldn't you rate your own services and thus demand the salary to match. Works like that here, especially for contracting, so I would say I want this much a day, and they pay it if they think I'm worth it... Salary and pay is always negotiable, providing you're service is good enough and they need you. |

I accepted it at the time, but today I turned it down (which was awfully awkward). I got a job at the local supermarket working in the deli. They said they won't pay me less than 9 dollars an hour and probably like 9.50, and lots of hours are available to me each week. I'm pumped! Hopefully this comes through because I rejected a couple of other offers today and I'm riding on this one. He said as long as the background check comes through (no reason it won't, have no criminal record) I will work there and should expect a call within a week! |
|
Glad to hear you found a job man. It's been getting a lot harder as of late. |
|
start work monday at the supermarket deli for 9 bucks an hour! thanks for the advice. |
