What's the standard salary for graveyard shift at a convenience store?

I might work from 3:30 AM to 11:30 AM at a local convenience store opening up and all that jazz. What type of salary should I expect/ask for? I have an "interview" this coming week; if they ask me what I think a fair wage would be, what should I say? I wouldn't do it for less than 10 dollars an hour, but I can't imagine the would pay me more than 12 dollars an hour (though I searched online and some stuff said 13-14 dollars?). Any ideas? As of now I will tell them that I think 10-12 dollars an hour would be fair.

I think that's so unfair the way employers ask what you expect to be paid. Cheap bastards are just looking for some dumb shmuck who will let themselves get taken advantage of.

They should just come out and say this is what we pay.

Wrong. If you don't have your own rate, your own appraisal of your skills and what you have to offer your employer (in monetary terms), then that only shows your lack of confidence and coherence when it comes to acquiring a job.

When naming what you expect to be paid, you aren't supposed to guess what a typical wage for that position is. You're supposed to name a price for your services, whatever they may be.

You failed to mention where you are being hired.
Minimum wage in Arkansas is 5.25.
Minimum wage in California is 7.00.

Minimum wage in Ontario, Canada is $9.50.

      (Roughly $8.10 USD)

EDIT: Fun fact. 1 Canadian Dollar = 31,936,817 Zimbabwe Dollar

      Sweet.

Vermont. Minimum wage = $8.06. I want to say 12 dollars, but I'm afraid that's too much. I won't do it for less than 10 though.

Say 12, consider it 10 + a 2 hour premium for working a GY shift.

Unless there is a whole ton of applicants, don't be afraid to put it a bit high $12-13. They're more likely to just say something like "We can't afford to hire someone for $13 an hour, how would you feel working for $11.50?" or "We'll have to start you at $XX and see how you do".

From what I've seen they won't toss your application away just because you wrote down an extra buck or two, unless you come off as totally inflexible in the interview.

I'm always hesitant to give a range.
Employer: "So you're willing to work for $10-12 dollars? Well 12 is such an awkward number...but you can't go wrong with 10!"
Me thinking: "Well I was going to do 12 dollars worth of work, but I guess I can settle for doing 10. I need more sleep anyway"

      Good luck with the interview!
Maybe, just for a second, you'll be awestruck.
      ...do you feel it to?

They told me 8.25 (and its a corporation so that won't change). I don't think I can do that. I mean, it's the worst possible shift (saturdays and sundays 330-1130 am) and they are offering me 19 cents above minimum wage? I have some interviews on thursday for other jobs... I am not sure if I am going to do this so I at least get some extra cash. I'll have to see...

For jobs at this level, the "expected wages" line is just a formality. You're going to make what they tell you you're going to make.

I thought it was a bit unrealistic to expect a starting salary of 12 dollars an hour working as a convenience store clerk. My business partner and I just hired a person to answer our phones and makes calls for us and her starting salary is $7.00 /hour. Things will be different after the probationary period but $12.00 /hour as a convenient store clerk? Cheeahh...

With that being said, wasup...you're much too intelligent for a position like that. Go ahead and start a business now while you're young. You're very smart and business savvy. What the hell are you waiting for?

Oh the Graveyard shift...It used to be my favorite shift when I worked in the Hotel... 11pm - 7am. I spent a lot of my time talking to the other staff, wondering the halls, and sampling the various treats in the pastry kitchen.

Over here, I got a base rate of $18 an hour, and then extra dollar for every hour after midnight till 6 I think.

I'd take it, the graveyard was easily the best shift, it was easy, got to meet heaps of cool people, own boss, and it looks good if you can work independently.

Yeah but...your hourly wage is not even in the same ballpark as to what he was offered. Yet you still insist he take it...

That may very well be a good thing to pursue in the future, but where will the money to start said business come from? As much some people may wish it, money doesn't just fall out of their ass. Everyone's gotta start somewhere - and that somewhere is usually minimum wage. I say just take it.

The way I see it, you can either A) work this shitty job and at least get something out of it until you can find one that's better or B) not work this shitty job and earn nothing until you can find one that's better. But the choice is yours. I'm just speaking as a guy who is working a shitty job.

Don't listen to the people telling you to 'just take it.' If you are not going to be happy making those wages, don't accept a job making those wages. In this day and age, you'd barely break even with that wage, even with few expenses, unless it was a second job. I make $10 and hour at my main job, but I work so few hours most weeks it really doesn't cut it. Luckily I have other opportunities for income through freelance work.

Get a job doing something you want to do, and making enough money to make it worth it to you even if you didn't. You may have to look a little longer to find such a job, but trust me when I say it is worth it.

I agree with this man! He has it spot on! Why wouldn't you rate your own services and thus demand the salary to match. Works like that here, especially for contracting, so I would say I want this much a day, and they pay it if they think I'm worth it... Salary and pay is always negotiable, providing you're service is good enough and they need you.

I accepted it at the time, but today I turned it down (which was awfully awkward). I got a job at the local supermarket working in the deli. They said they won't pay me less than 9 dollars an hour and probably like 9.50, and lots of hours are available to me each week. I'm pumped! Hopefully this comes through because I rejected a couple of other offers today and I'm riding on this one. He said as long as the background check comes through (no reason it won't, have no criminal record) I will work there and should expect a call within a week!
