As far as I know melatonin is not in anyway dangerous, if I am correct melatonin is actually made by the body to prepare us for sleep and melatonin supplements simply increase our melatonin levels in a artifical way to speed up the sleep process. If it was dangerous, I doubt it would be the over the counter supplement that it is.
But I am most definitely not a expert in this field so take my words with a grain of salt.

Melatonin is relatively safe, but in my experience it doesn't help with WILD. Melatonin leaves you drowsy but that's not what you want. You want your mind to be aware and alert while your body enters sleep.

If you take melatonin in the evening before sleep, it may help to promote a regular sleep cycle and that may improve your LD efforts in general. But if you take it in the middle of the night or early morning, it's just going to make you drowsy and upset your natural cycles in the daytime.

Not only is melatonin safe, it's also reported to be quite beneficial to ones health in various studies. I take melatonin at night to help me fall asleep...it works by lowering core body temperature and speeding up sleep onset. Melatonin has never had an impact on my dreams, so I can't really comment on that.

Melatonin is known to suppress REM in higher doses, which is how it can get some dream-enhancing effects through REM rebound, but I'm guessing it would just hurt your chances of WILDing if anything.

This question is pretty much answered but I wanted to throw a thought in. Maybe it's just me, but I find that it is does suppress REM but only for a short time. Maybe an hour? I have taken 10MG and woke 1.5hours later with vivid dream recall. I probably wouldn't use it to WILD unless you want to try timing it with more than one WBTB. I would imagine that once the REM suppressing effect is gone so is the drowsy effect. So, That's probably not ideal but if you insist... That's how I would approach it. Of course, I'm just guessing from my own experience.

Also, like every one else, I think it is very safe. I have read several websites stating that its almost impossible to overdose on melatonin. If that is true or not; I don't know. Just be smart and don't take more than you need and you'll be fine.
