I was looking on the internet and I have found a method of making yourself relaxed enough to go to sleep quite quickly. All the times I've tried it have resulted in falling asleep rather quickly, however I havn't got around to trying to use it with WBTB.
It involves a few minutes of quiet relaxation before going to sleep to put you in the right frame of mind for sleeping in 6 steps.
      Steps:

      1) Lie down on your back in a dark room.

      2) Close your eyes and try to focus on the shapes of light that you will “see” when your eyes are closed.

      3) After a minute of focusing on those shapes, you should feel tranquil. At this point, raise your left arm at 45 degrees and hold it for a count of five. At the end of the count, forget that your arm is connected to your torso and just let gravity take control - your arm will drop to the mattress.

      4) Next, raise your right arm, holding for a count of five and then releasing. Move on to your left leg, raising it 45 degrees in the air for a count of five, then release. Repeat for right leg.

      5) The last step of relaxation is to remove all stress from your neck, which is a common part of your body that “bears the brunt” of your difficult day. Slowly raise your neck slightly off the mattress for a count of five, and then release and let gravity take hold.

      6) Lying there, with your eyes closed, your entire body should feel completely at ease - almost weightless.[/b]
      Try it, see what happens.

Ok, the results I have from the times that I have tryed it indicate that you have to be sleepy when you do it like in the FLID technique. I tryed this straight after waking up and it made me even sleepier than I already was (and I had just reset the alarm). Either way it really helps on the SP front, especially if you visualize in your head weights of some kind pulling your legs back down to earth.
And for those that prefer to sleep on their sides, so do I, but when I found this method I had to try it. I even tryed a variation on my side, which was involves you lifting the leg on the side you're sleeping on outwards and upwards, and the arm over your head.

Sounds like an interesting idea, IceMan. I'll try it tonight, and let everybody know.

that sideways method didn't go that smoothly, I'm still trying to make it work properly, but the most comfortable way to do it is to have your arms in front of you, or if you can't be bothered to lift them just tense them really hard for 5 seconds then release.

That's a physical version of the usual progressive relaxation method mentioned in most places as preparation for WILDing (LaBerge, online sources, books, etc.).
The typical technique involves either tensing/relaxing your muscles from your feet to your neck (without large movements such as raising limbs) or, the version I use, simply willing body parts to relax by imagining them becoming heavier, energy rising/falling around them and taking them with it, etc.

But aye, though this is similar, it seems simpler and less streneous on the mind upon falling asleep seeing how moving body parts in such fashion isn't very complex in nature, unlike focusing on tensing muscles lightly or, more so, willing limbs to relax.

Great method to help in getting relaxed to fall asleep, and an excellent write up. It's easy to do, takes very little time, and works. Thanks for posting something so useful IceMan.

If you are lying on your stomach, then just do the movements backwards, a little harder maybe, and you won't be able to raise your limbs or neck as far, but they will still work, as they are just based on flexing the muscles, and then relaxing them, which is a very good technique for relaxing. They can probably be done also if laying on your side, but might be need to be done in more of just a flexing, relaxing, technique, but it should still work.
