      melatonin?

Does anyone know if melatonin does actually increase the chances of having a lucid dream? because I have been able to lucid dream at least 13 times in around 6 months and my dream recall is at around 90% so I was thinking will taking one tablet of 3mg melatonin before sleeping help in having lucid dreams?

      Any answers would be appreciated

From what I have experienced with melatonin, it will make your dreams insanely vivid. However.. I dont think it will help you with lucidity. Everytime I have taken it, it has not helped... but I dont attain lucidity that much anyway. Just make sure you don't take more than what is recommended, you dreams will go so real that you can't stay asleep.

Melatonin works on the rebound effect. It supressed your REM sleep early in the night, so your body compensates with increased dream activity later in the night and early morning. I don't think it would help you much. It can help increase your dream vividness and recall, but since you already have good recall and lucidity, it would probably just screw up your sleep cycle.

I don't like it because it makes me sleep deeper, making it harder for me to become lucid.

You can always give it a try and let us know how it goes.

      Have you read this?

After what Robot said, I think if your new and want to Lucid Dream take Melatonin. Helping your dream vividness and recall will be needed for Lucid Dreaming, but if your recall is fine I wouldn't worry to much about it.

By itself it hasn't helped me, I have taken it and then woke up 4 or 5 hours latter and taken L-Glutamine and Green Tea supplements and lucid dreamed, it may be good for this, some people take it then take Galantamine 4 or 5 hours latter. Alone it will just make you sleep deeper, have vivid dreams, but probably not recognize them as dreams. Valerian has that effect on me, I have extremely vivid dreams when I take it but have yet to recognize I am dreaming while on it. I find something that helps you sleep lighter increases the odds of becoming lucid, like Vitamin B6, caffeine, or DMAE.

Im rather new to all of this but Ive been taking a 5mg tab before bed the past couple of nights and the vividness and my recall of dreams definetly is better. however it was only a few nights before this that I even started at all with all this dream business and once I knew about it my recall and dream vividness was pretty good. Im not going to take any tonight and see if im just getting better in my form, or if the melatonin is helping.

I have tried melatonin the last 2 nights and i havent noticed any increase in vividity. It makes it harder to remember my dreams also. Im really sceptical about it but plan on trying it again.

well I have these supplements available to take alongside melatonin and which ones do you think I should use(also I don't want to be taking too high doses of these supplements I don't want to risk any brain damage, if any)
I have melatonin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, galamantine, and valerian supplements. I really want to maximize the odds of lucidity yet not take so many pills at once so I would want advice on how to get the best combination possible out of these supplements.

I currently only know of combinations from this site,(which are B6+melatonin,B12+folic acid,galamantine+B6, and valerian+melatonin.
Any way of making the best combination?

I think B6 helps melatonin to convert to seratonin or something...does anyone know?

It definetly increases my REM amount. I can pull out 4 1 hour dream periods after I initially wake up at 4:00. And remember the dreams consistently.

IMO the tablets/herbs/drugs don't magically make you Lucid dream. Including Melatonin.
I have found that in co-ordination with technique they give you the occasional mind set to allow the right conditions to set off a Lucid Dream.
I found this with Dreamamins (galantamine). I had diff doses many many nights expecting miracles, and nothing but a pleasant tiredness and more movie like dreams.
It wasn't till I took them and WILDed b4 initial sleeping using combined techniques I read here, that I became Lucid for a long time.
      Just my experience.

The whole concept of trying to improve one's chances of attaining lucidity on a given night by taking drugs, even if they are legal supplements, bothers me. You're probably not going to do any real damage if you take a low dose of melatonin once, but it can't be good for you. Besides, vitamins and minerals tend to be more effective when you absorb them naturally in your diet. I know I'm not answering your question directly, but taking a banana for its Vitamin B6 before you go to bed is going to be a lot healthier.

Well DSR I have to disagree. Our lives are filled with preservatives, chemicals and even the city air we breath is toxic.
Next time you go and eat McDonalds, or drink Coke, think of what you said. A few vitamins aint gonna do any more harm.
So many examples, but my point made.

Well, I don't eat fast food and I don't drink soda anymore.

I can't imagine that taking high dosages of supplements (in comparison to the amount found in food) is good for you. It's one thing if your physician says that you need more vitamin X in your diet. It's another thing if you say, "Hmm, I should take X mg tablets of melatonin because it will improve my lucid dreaming skills." Even supporters of supplements only recommend them to supplement an unbalanced diet (hence the term "supplement"), not for recreational purposes. If you want to go the supplement route, that's you're decision. Just note that virtually all medications and substances have at least some risk attached.

If you decide to supplement with melatonin i suggest keeping the dose under 3 mg. Excess amounts are associated with seasonal affective disorder, and who knows what else it could cause. I feel its a gamble tweaking with hormone levels. Melatonin has shown to have very low toxicity, but there are many other things to consider besides toxicity.

edit: melatonin does occur in many things outside the body, but not in substantial quantities that you would get more than micrograms by consuming it.

You risk getting hit by a bus just walking out your door.
You can get cancer even if you are the healthiest person alive.

Well most of us eat some junk food and drink soda's, and not eat our fruit and veggies to get our vitamins.
So a couple more chemicals added to the pile in our day wont do any harm.

Just do what you like...life is short but... obviously don't overdo the dosages.

I prefer to experiment with substances found in plants other than food. If you take the b6 and choline I'd stay below the RDI and not use it every night. A sign that you are getting too much choline is a stiff neck or pain in the neck or spine.
