Actually it isnt though. The NovaDreamer uses technology to detect when you're in REM sleep and then sends a cue, either flashing lights or audio (that isnt too bright or too loud to wake you up), that you can learn to recognize in your dream.
As he said, it was an accident and he just so happened to recognize the light was on without waking up. You could easily ask your parent who gets up for work at 4am to turn your light on when they get up(if you have one that is.)
The NovaDreamer sends you a cue whenever you in dream state, which is by far as good as your gonna get. Alot more complex then an automatic lightswitch though.
I'd see how it would work but i'd rely on the ND first.
