L-Theanine works better for me. Valerian knocks me out, pretty much, though it does help you relax, it often puts you in to deep of sleep, though it might work after already sleeping, then take some valerian. I have tried this but either I went back into too deep of sleep, or something kept me from going back to sleep, like the telephone. Of course, I rarely have HI, so it may work great for you. I did take Valerian last night, woke up after 7 hours of sleep still very tired feeling, took 200mg of L-Theanine, and slept another 1 1/2 hours, no lucids. L- Theanine often works so I feel it is likely because I was still so tired from the Valerian I slept too deeply. Both of these substances increase GABA levels, but L-Theanine also increases dopamine and decreases serotonin, and promotes alpha brain waves, which makes sleep lighter, and helps me to become concious easier, I usually will wake up after a hour or so, on a WBTB after sleeping all night then going back to sleep and then WILD, the last time it worked great untill I thought my telephone was ringing, it wasn't, and then I false awakened.

Anyway give the Valerian a try, it is a favorite of mine when I need to get some sleep, and it works similiar to L-Theanine in that it increases GABA, though I don't think it effects dopamine or serotonin like L-Theanine and I have read it increases deep sleep so it likely causes more delta and theta brain waves. This isn't all bad though, a lot of psychics and OBE practicianers say theta is the brain wave to aim for to OBE, but maintaining or gaining conciousness at the theta level is difficult, though possible.
