      First Lucid Dream!

I'm fascinated by Lucid Dreaming and do remember a lot of my dreams. I've just never quite been aware I've been dreaming before. I say quite because there is a trigger which makes me realise I'm dreaming but then I wake up but that's often because I need to wake up.

This dream is the first I've had which I became aware of dreaming and not needed to wake up:-

I ‘appeared’ in my dream in the first floor of a building I used to work in that no longer exists (the whole business was flattened many years ago). However, the building, in my dream had been completely refurbished from when I last worked there in 1990.

When I appeared at the top of the stairs, instead of going left towards the office I worked in, I went right to the office at the end. It was a smaller office than the one I shared with my co-worker, but larger than the other offices in the first floor of the building. There was nothing to speak of in that office, so I left.

I began walking towards the office I worked in, noting along the way the other offices that were there. Just before going into my office, there would have been a stationery cupboard on my left, running parallel with the staircase, but the wall and door had been taken down. In its place were two white roller blinds. I looked behind them to see that the cupboard was completely empty of stationery. It had a set of plastic Venetian blinds stood up as if ready to be put up somewhere.

I continued on to my office. My desk was still there, well, a different desk was in its place; one that looked more modern. It also had a small file cabinet next to it. Likewise, my co-workers desk opposite was the same as mine was now in the dream. Standing in front of my desk, I looked over to my right and noticed there were fewer file cabinets. A corner desk had been fitted which had a computer on it.

I realised I wasn’t alone: my former co-worker, Melissa*, was there, but she didn’t used to work in this department but in the other department where we both worked together at another time. In the dream however, she worked in this department with me and I just accepted at as if it were fact.

There were also two other women there; both dark haired. I asked their names as I hadn’t seen them before. The one closest to me introduced herself as Jenny. The other said she was called Alison. I figured we were all going to be working together.

I looked out of the window on my left and saw, where I would have expected to see the Sun, a planet which I thought was Earth. I wondered... if that was Earth, then where were we? It looked quite close.

I looked at Jenny and asked, “Am I dreaming?” She didn’t respond. This time I stated, “I am dreaming. I’m dreaming!” I moved away from my desk to the middle of the room and said to the three of them, “Watch this!” I jumped in the air and did a backward somersault; something I’ve never been able to perform in my waking life! When I was up in the air, turning over and coming down to the ground, I felt weightlessness; the whole somersault slower than what would have ordinarily been executed if I’d been able to do it for real. They all were delighted, so I did another one.

I looked again at the Earth outside. It was much closer now and it was situated between this building and the houses over the road. I thought, if I could reach up, I could touch it. I didn’t feel afraid as I did when I used to see Earths in my dreams like this. I’d always been worried about gravitational pulls, planetary collisions, etc, but this time, I knew it was going to be ok.

At that point, I had to leave. On my way out of the door, I looked to my left and saw people in the two offices on my left; I could see the backs of their heads. They were both men but I don’t know who they were.

I went downstairs to what would have been the computer department. Most of the downstairs was now open plan, and had the feel of a store sales floor. There were many display shelves with coloured items on them that I thought were porcelain. I couldn’t identify them beyond that so I assumed they were plates/tableware.

I spotted Harriett* leave her computer room; the only room that escaped the new open plan layout. I approached her and asked, “Do you still have computers in there?” She looked a little confused and said yes. I realise now I didn’t ask my question correctly. I meant were they the same type as before when she used to work there or had the whole system been overhauled and maybe even shrunk in physical size. The computers she used to work with where huge beasts with massive circular storage disks which she had to lug to another part of the company for safety after she did the backups.

We started to walk together towards another department. En route, I pulled her into space what was sometimes used as a meeting room next to our display products that the company manufactured. I said, “Watch this!” and showed her my somersault. She laughed, “How did you manage that?” I said, “I don’t know. I’ve never been able to do it before.” Then I did the splits.

We continued on our way but what used to be a corridor to the other department was some kind of vehicle like a bus or train, with a conductor. She was a small black lady in a burgundy uniform who was about to charge us £2 each to travel on it. Harriett was about to say something but I said, “It’s ok, I’ve got this.” I said to the conductor, “We’ve already paid.” She just accepted this and left us alone. Why was I so confident? Because I knew it was a dream?

At the other side of the very short journey, we were going to be charged again as a toll fee. I don’t know what happened there as my dream seems to have skipped over that bit.

Instead of walking straight ahead to the other department, we turned right, which likely would have been in the ladies toilets but instead was a dark street heading towards town. Harriett began talking about getting Carers Allowance for looking after Kevin*. I was certain Kevin was the name of Harriett’s Dad but he died in either ‘93/’94. I was about to ask her if she meant her Dad and if she talking about when he was alive but I was woken up.

Thanks for your reply; I really appreciate it.

I’ve been wanting to do this for ages and knew I must be near enough there with various things happening in my regular dreams such as knowing people out of context, correct places geographically but the scenery changed somehow compared with how it is in waking life.

Also, the ‘Goldilocks Syndrome’ when trying to find a toilet in my dream only to find the right one (all the rest are wrong in some way: clogged, broken, no seat, etc) then realise at the last minute the toilet, although perfect, is in the middle of the living room, then I realise I need to wake up to visit the bathroom. This has happened so many times with so many cues from my dream to wake me.

I don’t know how long that my first lucid dream actually lasted but I think because it was a familiar place, I was able to provide sufficient detail of it that I was simply aware of the differences to add to it.
