      Terrifying Dream

      I don't usually have nightmares.
I woke up from this dream terrified and short of breath.

      The dream:
I woke up to a knocking sound at my door. I got up and started opening the door.
About halfway through opening the door, I awoke suddenly from a knocking sound.
I got up and tried to open the door again. It became my closet door. This startled me so, I woke up.
I walked over to my door (no knocking sound this time) and tried to open the door.
The sound of the door opening turned into the sound of my heater running, this startled me so I woke up again.
By now I was scared that I was in a coma, or possibly dead. I opened my door and ran outside. I tripped over an object in the yard. This woke me up again.
This time, I just lied there, too afraid to get up. I was convinced I was trapped.
Fear began to creep up until I woke up with a numb feeling in my body and no breath.
      I was finally awake.

This dream haunted me throughout the day.

The best and only thing to do in a dream like this is try to keep your cool and evaluate the sitaution.
Ask yourself is it a dream, do a reality check and re-affirm your position of control in the dream. Try to go to a different scene and think of happy thoughts, being confident and happy in the dream world is the key to avoiding and conquering nightmares (obviously easier said than done).

You must always remember that it is your dream and that there is nothing that can take away that control from you, no matter what happens you will ultimately wake up.

Like dutchraptor said, there's nothing to worry about, false awakenings can be confusing but you can use them to get lucid, do reality check whenever you wake up/get out from the bed and enjoy the ride.
