      Beautiful Vivid Music...

      Hi everyone,

Over the past 6 months i've been experiencing something quite unusual and rather amazing, I'm not sure quite how to catergorise it but I think the closest would be some for of lucid dreaming perhaps.

Basically what usually happens is, after a long period of sleeping of ususally 5-6 hours, I will wake up briefly and then drift into a wierd state of conciousness where I believe I am not dreaming or fully awake, but am perfectly aware and concious.

Now the strange thing is that during this time I have begun to experience beautiful music. Originally I would simply think about an existing song or composition and I could hear it back in amazing clarity, with every note and lyric being perfectly recreated. It was an incredibly pleasent and relaxing experience and would always awake after, often in total bewilderment.

Over the past couple of months I also have leaned that I can also create and manipulate completely original music in realtime. For example I can think to start off with a violin solo and build into a full orchestral piece. I can also change/morph the music to any genre, for example, classical to rock, rock to dance etc. It's amazing! The latest progression has been that I can create completely original vocals and lyrics to go with the music. The last experience I had, I was amazed at how everything rhymed perfectly and how the lyrics had such deep and emotional meaning.

What's most amazing to me about all this is that i've never played a musical instrument in my life and am not even what i'd call a 'musical person' and Im having trouble coming to terms with how exactly my brain is even capable of creating such vivid, intricate and moving music in realtime without a single fault. The only downside is, like some dreams, the music fades from memory quickly but the memory of the experience is very strong.

I have been thinking about these experiences a lot recently and am beginning to wonder if this strange phenomenom is limited to music. Im a 3d Environmental artist by profession and am planning to see if I can summon up imagery as well as music to inspire me in a recent project im undertaking. Currently when creating the music there is no imagery only darkness, its kind of like sitting and listening to your ipod with your eyes closed.

Im really curous as to whether I am the only one having this type of experience? or even if anyone can help explain what is going on?

      Thanks!
      Rob

One thing this made me think of is that sometimes when people are on intensive meditation retreats, they can hear very detailed music or other sounds as if it's really occurring. It sounds like some very great thing that comes from a mind that is in a relaxed, receptive frame of mind and/or like an auditory form of HI?

And there was me thinking Vipassana sounded boring.

I had a great dream one time where there was this glowing orb flying about, making the sounds of beethoven's moonlight sonata, and some people were chasing it and trying to control it. It was nice.

I've heard wonderful music in my dreams so many times, but sadly only remember it about 15% of the time. When I do I try to record the melody at the least, but I always feel that without the original sound, I couldn't do it justice.

Some of the world's most famous music has been heard in or inspired by dreams. If you can, try to remember the melody and record it (on your phone or something) as soon as you can.

      Hi brisck1

I have had experiences very similar to this while in between wakefulness and sleep, the peripheral of being in a dream. It also tends to happen after 5-6 hours sleep (sometimes more) and usually happens as I am falling back to sleep having been to the bathroom or just from turning over after waking.

I have heard long and detailed songs - usually with lyrics - that sound incredible. I have not experienced this to the extent that you have where I can consciously control which genres and styles of music I can hear but this is something I definitely intend on doing next time I find myself in this state.

I have no idea what causes this to happen, I have also heard beautiful music in dreams themselves but this is slightly different to the experience of having music playing when half asleep. Your analogy of it being similar to listening to headphones with your eyes closed is very accurate.

This is another example of the massive potential of the brain - I often surprise myself with the vast amount of lyrics and songs I know off by heart when hearing music and I would theorise that my brain is so packed full of musical phrases and sounds that it somehow subconsciously grafts something brilliant based on what I find to be the most appealing musical phrases, or randomly generates music according to the patterns found within the songs I listen to. I listen to music for hours everyday across a wide range of genres which could have something to do with it.

It is fascinating and I am glad that you have experienced something similar.

      Hi Brisck1,
This is really interesting to me. I'm not an experienced LDer but I have had a few and most of them have been WILDS. I often hear whispers or talking once I slip into SP and sometimes I hear music as well. The reason I'm posting is because one of my hobbies is to make mashups which are pretty much songs I make by taking parts of certain songs and mixing them with other songs to create something new. I'm hoping I can do what you do when I become a little more experienced at LDing. I guess I would be what you call a "musical" person so it's awesome to hear that someone who has never really played music or taken classes is making beautiful music in their head. Really inspiring! -Discord

I've also experienced the exact same thing as brisck1 and taffer, a variety of SP I guess and it's kind of rare, usually either classical or free style jazz compositions because it's easier I guess for the mind to blend sounds together like an impromptu MIDI sequencing. Songs with lyrics is an very ocassional thing but yes.

Does anyone hear a "radio" in the backgroud during SP? Happens to me sometimes, I heard a pretty cool song...completely unreal. Sometimes it's like talk radio, I call it the "phantom radio" phemomena.

I've had this same exact experience, down to every detail. It's really awsome, hard to describe.

Yeah man I get this, usually before I fall asleep. Choosing whatever genre you like, and your brain just runs absolutely wild with it. I don't know where it comes from, but it's damn fantastic

I haven't had that experience (it sounds so awesome!) but I am always amazed at how music in my dreams is exactly like in RL. I even sang a song (The Death of All the Romance) in a dream a couple of days ago!

I think I've tried to play it on the piano in a dream before, but I'd love to hear Moonlight sonata in a dream. I get teary sometimes in RL, so I wonder what I'd do in a dream! Also, Für Elise.

This reminds me of a musical prodigy I saw on Oprah once. Here's a little about him:

"Guyland: Accordion player. 10-years old. Background: Grandfather was professional accordion player. When his grandfather passed, Guyland says he appeared in the young boy's dream. In the dream, he gave him his accordion. The next day, Guyland could play. Perfectly. He's never had a lesson."

really detailed vivid music gets invented in my dreams quite often. Also very often I hear songs in the background that actually exist, and I can remember them perfectly (or at least i think i do). Also, once in a dream I experienced listening to two separate pieces of music simultaneously (non invented pieces), complete with parts that sounded really interesting together and parts where they went dissonant and horribly out of sync with each other - this particular time it was just the music with no vision.

I usually have that happen to me every night. Just not in such detail. I don't notice it at first as I'm falling asleep, but when I suddenly wake up just before falling asleep I can recall that I was hearing music and voices. Very realisitic ones. It's pretty cool.
