      Vibrations

Hello everyone, probably like many members I was doing a search to understand what is going on during REM sleep that is disturbing/unsettling/scary and repetitive. I suffer from above average nightmares. Some of which I wake, I know I'm awake but I'm still in sleep paralysis. I can't move, or speak. I hear and feel odd waves of vibrations. It reminds me of a fan. Remember when we were children and we would talk in the fan. The air waves would interrupt the sound waves making a choppy sound. I can hear this choppy sound approach and get louder and louder, during this time my body "feels" like strong vibrations are running through. Coming in waves. It's terrifying. I tried on a few occasions to remain calm but eventually I get sucked into the terror of the moment. Has anyone experienced this? Can anyone help me take control of my "other" nightmares. You know the normal if we dare use normal, ones that you wake up sweating, screaming, crying and at times so freaked out sleep is eluded? I have a lot of what I would label paranormal type dreams. I'm at the end of my rope :/ I really believe I need some help. I read a few feeds and actually feel confident there's help out there. I don't know where to turn.

The fear that happens to most people experiencing sleep paralysis is the fear of the unknown. This is epecially so for those experiencing it for the first time. Once you become familiar with the symptoms and after you have experienced it a time or two, you can come to recognize what it actually is and that there really isn't anything to be afraid of. The vibrations are just one of many different tactile, auditory and visual hallucinations that can frighten one. Once you make the mental shift and come to realize that it represents the opportunity to use it as a springboard to lucidity, the more frightening aspects of it will cease to frighten you and you will relish the opportunity presented.

I first experienced "the vibrations" during a night time meditation in which I was following suggestions from Buhlman and Monroe's books on achieving OBE's. (I have since come to the opinion that OBE's (astral travel) are special distinct cases of lucid dreaming, but regardless, when "the vibrations" hit me I was terrified!) In my mind, I had anticipation the vibrations being a high frequency, low amplitude tingling/electrical type effect. What I actually experienced was a high amplitude, low frequency effect that felt like my entire body was going to be shaken to pieces! I was totally unprepared for this. I felt my inner self "break loose" from my body and experience complete loss of orientation and stability, and though still within it's confines, I was totally unstable and fearful of literally "falling out" of my body! I kept saying "Oh my god! Oh my god! This is REAL! This is HAPPENING!" I was overwhelmed with fear and found the situation absolutely terrifying! Eventually the vibrations subsided and I lay there with my heart pounding and adrenaline pumping when WHAM! I got hit with a second onslaught!

In subsequent years, I experienced 3 other similar events, but never with the same violence of vibrations. I was never that afraid again however.

In your situation, you might view it as an opportunity to take control, recognizing that it is an entry way into lucidity which can be a very fun and delightful experience! Let me draw an analogy... Let's say you enjoy swimming and look forward to a day of swimming at the beach or a lake. Regardless of how much you enjoy swimming, that first shock and discomfort of diving into the cold water has to be overcome in order to experience the joy of swimming!

      Go for it!

      Tarvus,

Thank you for taking time out to respond. OBE, Im going to assume you are referring to an out of body type experience. The vibrations start off low or dull and build as you described getting very intense. I did not connect that to an OBE. I wonder?! I love your swimming analysis lol My hope in this journey that I actually regard going to sleep as an experience of joy instead of worry if I will make it through the night without the dreams.

So your actively researching how to 'astral travel'. Let me ask if you dont mind, were you experiencing nightmares and such and did that encourage you to look deeply into the amazing untapped capabilities of the human mind? It appears we joined this community round about the same time. Have you been able to uncover useful tools in your journey?

      Again thank you for responding.

I have been gravitating towards the opinion that an OBE (out of body experience) is a special class off lucid dream, Rosee. I don't like the term "astral travel" because to me, it implies something that I don't believe is necessarily happening. My first experiences with altered dream state consciousness were a number of hypnagogic events. These were weird and a bit unsettling, but I just assumed they were some sort of weird dream. Later, I awoke one morning and experienced what could be described as a spontaneous out of body type event. That was what piqued my interest in OBE's. Initially, I thought OBE's and lucid dreams were entirely different events. I had never had a "lucid dream" but had experienced three OBE type experiences before having my first lucid dream. Later, I had a particularly memorable, intense, and vivid lucid dream which, when it ended, lead to a false awakening type event when then immediately lead to another OBE type event. Since that particular sequence of events, I had had quite a few lucid dreams, but no more OBE events. The OBE's seemed to stop when my opinion started to change to endorse the possibility that OBE's and lucid dreams are manifestations of the same type of thing.

OBE's and lucid dreams seem, of the surface, to be entirely different things, but I am leaning toward the opinion that OBE's are a subset type of lucid dream.

Regarding nightmares, sure - I've had a few in my lifetime, but I never regarded them as anything other than bad dreams. I've never been plagued by them nor obsessed over them after having them. My first OBE was a very peaceful, pleasant event that happened as I awakened from a peaceful night of sleep. My SECOND obe was the one I described with the violent vibrations (which I was deliberately attempting to have), and it totally scared the daylights out of me!
