America Vs Canada: Why we hate each other so much?

I didn't want to get modded for posting a morality type thread outside of the Philosophy Forum.

So why do Americans/Canadians have (in some cases) such a strong distrust and/or dislike in Canadians/Americans? All we've (Meaning Canada/America on the whole, not me and a few.) ever done is be as good trading and general partners with the U.S./Canada as possible, but for some reason, Americans/ Canadians still find reason to Bother us, sometimes digging into centuries old issues. Are we really that bad? Or is it something that was passed down a few generations, father hates Canada/America, Daughter hates Canada/America? Or is it just plain 'ol envy?

Let's get some pros and cons on both.
"And when he gets to heaven, to St Peter he will tell: 'One more soldier reporting sir; I've served my time in hell." - Winston Churchill

Its not hate. Canada just doesn't come across as being useful. There is really no reason to even think about canada. They are peaceful and we don't have any huge problem with millions of people crossing the boarded like mexico. They are never going to attack anyone, they don't cause problems. No one is starving in the streets. Its like they are just there. As far as anyone cares they could be luxemburg.

As for canada, they most likely just hate that we ignore them. I am sure there is a lot of envy there too.

Thats about it though. I never seen anyone who really hated canada though. Maybe dislike or think they are a joke, but not hate. Not like say france. Then again there is a lot of french speaking people in canada, maybe thats part of it too. Or maybe they just think canada is wasting all its land and so they want to annex them heh.

Deep within the loins of every true American dwells the deep desire to conquer Canada. Our previous attempts at conquest have failed quite miserably, and for a while we were almost content to give up on our fantasy of controlling those vast empty lands north of us, but then we aquired Canada from the Russians and that only served to whett our appetite for northern land, and the separation between the U.S. proper, and our northern territory gives us reason to lust after it even more. Then the Canadian government goes on adopting leftist policies and we think to ourselves, "If we controlled Canada we wouldn't abuse her so!" and it makes us terribly jealous.

As an American I can only speculate why Canadians dislike us, it probably is some combination of our lust for Canada, American cultural and political rudeness, and the fact that some parts of Canada are populated entirely by wannabe frenchmen.

Of course if both governments dissolved we would form one contiguous society(with the exception of the tadpoles in quebec) and live in neverending happiness and peace, but that's not going to happen anytime soon, and so America will always turn an envious eye at her northern neighbor, and plot her conquest of the great white north.

I just went to Alaska, and it made me dislike America even more. Something so beautiful is spoiled by the red white and blue. Just give us Alaska and I'll be happy with you yanks.

Or just take out the gun stores, the over abundant fireworks and liquor stores, the American flag that is strewn up every 1.5 meters, and the stereotypical pigheaded jerks that talk with a fake accent. The most repulsive thing I noticed in Alaska is the extreme patriotism.

America does more evil than good, stop waving it in my face.

I always considered the Canadian/American thing as playful teasing. Canada is America's older brother, and brothers usually can't go two minutes without picking on each other. I guess it was rather naive of me to not realize that some (most?) people take it a little too far and turn it into plain hatred. Morons…

You know, being in Europe for a week has given me a new outlook on America and the world in general. Americans tend to think that the world revolves around us. We’re so convinced that we’re the shining star in the centre of the universe when we’re actually a big thug—you know, the kind that likes to beat up old ladies and steal their purses. We claim patriotism and use it to fan the fires of hate toward other countries. We get all big-headed about ourselves without even realizing that our patriotism and general attitude comes off as arrogance to the rest of the world. No wonder people hate us. From the outside, we’re total assholes.

Anyway, I didn’t mean to go off on a small tangent like that. I just think the whole “my country is better than yours” is really, really stupid and if we’re going to tease each other, it should be in jest and not malice.

See thats the kind of things that make people mad. When you say the US is evil. You did say you came to the US and saw it. If you don't want it waved in your face you could just stay in canada.

Maybe canada is just jealous that we took over the name america. I mean we got all north and south america and how many people call themselves americans? No one, except people living in the US.

I also noticed you said there was a flag every "1.5 meters". The US still has not converted to the metric system. That has to make a lot of people mad.

I think it basicly comes down to the fact that the US doesn't listen to other people. So then places like canada gets all mad that the US won't listen so they start insulting us, and then we really stop listening to them because they are just being annoying. Then canada does something out of spite to US which makes us mad so then we laugh at them for not doing anything.

The metric system is just bad, I know our system is somewhat difficult because of the base 10 number system we use, base 12 would be much better and it would be largely consistant with our current system of measurement. You can divide a foot by 2, 3, 4, and 6 evenly you can only divide a meter by 2 and 5 which makes our system much more useful for many buisnesses for whom it is more convineint to be able to divide their materials evenly and having some difficulty when trying to compute things in thier heads, than having an easy time computing things in their head and a real difficulty in dividing up thier materials.

Personally I say we scrap both systems and adopt one like the metric system, only based on 12 rather than 10, and change our current base 10 number system to a base 12 number system, which would make math and measurement both immensely simple.

Sorry, I just had to call you on this. A meter is 100 cms. 100. Just like a dollar is 100 cents. And a century is 100 years. My high school grades were far from 100%. Things are much easier to calculate when they're in multiples of 100 or 10.

Well try getting a third of a meter and you get 33.3333333333 continuing a third of a foot and you get 4 inches.

The metric system is the way to go. Not just for length but for weight, energy, etc.
Ask yourself: Why don't physicists use imperial measurement in their equations?
Answer: Because it would be a nightmare.

Let's examine some imperial measurement units:

      1 foot = 12 inches (fair enough)
1 yard = 3 feet (first it goes up by 12, now by 3?)
1 mile = 1760 yards (where the hell did THAT come from?)
      1 link = 7.92 inches (decimals? wtf?)
1 rod (or pole or perch) = 25 links (make up your mind)
1 chain = 22 yards = 4 rods (who came up with this??)

      1 pound = 16 ounces (why 16?)
      1 stone = 14 pounds (uh... 14?)
      1 quarter = 2 stones (a quarter is not a quart!)
      1 ton = 2240 pounds (random)

      1 pint = 20 fl ounce (oh so it's 20 now?)
1 gallon = 8 pints (i give up; words cannot express the weirdness)

Basically the main (big) problem is that the ratios from one unit to the next (eg. pounds to stones) isn't consistant. It blows.

I guess there's always the rivalry thing between countries... New Zealanders despise us (in a friendly -- I hope -- way) and we despise England (in a friendly way) but of course people always take things too far.

I think it's kind of the other way around. A friend of mine went to NZ a few years ago and he said everyone there really liked Australians, and taxi drivers were giving them free rides and stuff.

      BLAME CANADA

      Times have changed,
      Our kids are getting worse
      They won't obey their parents,
They just want to fart and curse. Should we blame the government, or blame society, or should we blame the images on tv No!
      Blame Canada! Blame Canada

Canada is a beautifully innocent and peaceful place to live without baddies or nasty people while AMERICA is full of EVIL and Malignant people who will burn you alive without looking into your eyes to say "hello" first (according to Michael Moore anyway) - "Fat "American" Asshole".

Canadian Kids: Hey, its cool in Canada, we are peaceful and stuff - its not like America and stuff because people there kill each other and rape their women.

      American Kid: Canadians Suck!

ha ha...you could say the exact same thing about the Scots and the English...although i don't think that's as bad as it once was...
i for one, prefer the Scots for their passion, energy and zeal. And the fact they aren't afraid to fight for what they believe in...
I've often wondered, if sometimes, the English just react too late...

"Patriotism is the beleif that your country is the best because you were born there."

Ha... wish I knew who said that.

One thing that puzzles me about America is that in every news story I see there are American flags everywhere. Do most Americans seriously have a flag flying in their front yard or whatever? I mean you see it in movies and all, but sometimes exaggerate...

The reason this puzzles me is... don't you all know you're in America? If so, then why do so many people wave those flags about... it seems as if they want to make sure that they aren't in fact somewhere else.

I've never known any Americans to hate Canadians or the other way around either... Come to think of it, I've not really even heard Americans talking about Canadians really at all either.

Really I think most people are able to find better things to occupy their time and minds than conjuring hate mongering against some arbitrary group. Usually the only people who can't find better things to do than conjure up some hate mongering are politicians and the occasional hate groups.

It is exaggerated, a lot. Most people don't have a flag outside their house. A lot of stores however have flags. Its not even close to half of them but if you drive around thats the only place your really going to see them.
