I think the movie actually said there was a couple minutes of brain activity after the body shuts down. They weren't referring to as time stretching or anything it was suppose to be probably the most inside your head you could ever get and dreams always seem longer than the time that actually elapsed.

If you look at it subjectively, the consciousness can't die, so as the exact moment of death approaches, time slows down. It's like the moment of death is an asymptote and as you approach it time streatches on to infinity. This is all assuming that the commonly held atheistc materialst worldview is true.[/b]
I'm not sure where you got that idea from but my understanding of conciousness is defined by having a functioning, aware brain. Once the brain stops functioning, conciousness ceases to exist. You are referring to something spiritual.

I was an athiest for awhile as well, but now I'm a very skeptical agnostic since the day I realized I couldn't prove that a deity did not exist. All I could prove is that the religious books doesn't coincide with what really occurs and the way things really work. So I remain against organized religion seeing it as almost an exploitation of people using fear of punishment.

But I'm not really against the idea of spirits because like stated earlier by someone else earlier there could easily be and forces we have yet to be able to measure or even percieve. Yet then it gets to the arguments on whether souls are recycled, or always fresh or where they even come from. The argument against reincarnation is in that same scene that badassbob was referring to in Waking Life. Our population is doubling at an amazing rate. There are more humans now then there ever were so your chances of being an old soul are kind of small.

I should probably stop this post I'm not even addressing the question on what happens when we die. It's a mystery for now.

I catholic so I have a couple opinions on this subject. On one hand, I believe we are "reborn," we're dead in one body but we are a newly born baby in the other. On the other hand, I believe heaven, is a Matrix itself, a programmed reality created by god, where anything is possible. It'd be nearly exactly like earth, but better.
An Idea. A single idea from the human mind can build cities. An idea can transform the world and rewrite all the rules.

I'm Jewish, and we're supposed to believe that when you die you go to heaven (not hell, there is no hell). But I believe that when you die you are reincarnated into another body, just born, with no recall of you past life.

But what about the way the population grows so quickly? Is God constantly creating new souls to keep up?

Well, since i am atheist and dont believe in a soul, i will just be dead with no concious part of me left. In other words i wont care that im dead because i wont know.

Kinda hard to "think" after death without a brain

I don't know what I feel happens when we die. Whether or not theists want to admit it, there is just about enough "objective" evidence to argue, logically, that no deity exists. In turn, whether or not atheists want to admit, there is just about enough "objective" evidence to argue, logically, that the physical universe doesn't even exist, objectively.
Without being ignorant to both (or completely biased to one) of those concepts, it's hard to believe in anything with any sort of certainty.

      Found this old documentary...

The Tibetan Book of the Dead

Very interesting. There are actually 2 documentaries. Same info but different outcome to the story.

I believe that once you die you are to meet Lucifer. NOT an evil presence, just an entity named Lucifer. He is simply a gatekeeper in a dimension(also known as the biblical "Hell") between your conscious reality and the gateway(the biblical "Heaven").

The way you react to this new experience of "death", the revelation of what is truly real, and your reaction to the encounter of Lucifer will determine whether you are fit to enter the gateway or to be simply reincarnated back to the human reality for another try in order to gain the right knowledge for the next life. Once through this gate you will step into the world of Shambhalla, a paradise known only to the enlightened and those who are truly ready for the next life.

I can only wonder what is after the life in Shambhalla. I just hope I can attain the right state of mind before I die so I can enter through the gate.

I'm not referring to anything spiritual. Consciousness is being aware(not necessarily able to think about it) of something. If you are dead you aren't aware of anything. Just prior to death, however, the last thing you are conscious of lasts forever(from your point of view) because there is nothing after it. The only reason we percieve time is because what we are conscious of changes, but there is no change from the last thing you are conscious of and therefore time stops.
