To be happy
For something greater (God, to get to heaven)
Did I go overboard? |

the purpose of life... is to HAVE some kind of purpose in it |
My opinion on the purpose of life is so contradictory I don't even know where to start. What I can say is neither of those two options come close. |
Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.
The purpose of life is to make of it whatever you please. So, neither of those two options. |
Why do you question the purpose? In that lies the answer for me . |
There is no inherent purpose other than to continue the tradition of life. The true purpose for your life is what you make of it. So make that purpose meaningful. |
Which raises the question... What is the purpose of meaning? |
Perhaps the idea of purpose is a human concept that does not translate very well to the n-th level? |
your purpose is to learn and share what you've learned. that's the meaning of existence. that's how anything exists in the first place, and because it does, it always will. that's why the concept of a final heaven (and a final hell) is flawed, because when the ability to convert (unawareness to awareness) is lost, time stops. if there is time in heaven, the people in heaven will have to be exchanging information, which means there will still be unawareness, which means the people in heaven would not be perfect, which means they would have flaws, which would make them...sinners. |

Ignorant bliss is an oxymoron; but so is miserable truth.
One could say that one is a subset of another... after all, if chasing some bigger purpose makes you happy, then the "bigger purpose" is a means to an end (the end being, "to be happy") . |
i dont think the purpose to life is just to be happy. what might make you happy at the time. might make others un-happy. i find it very peculiar that humans (most) will sacrifice their own happiness to bring happiness to others |

bringing happiness to others makes me happy. you must find the perfect balance between selfishness and selflessness. think of others but not to the point that you forget yourself. you have to remember that people care about you, too, and when you hurt, they will hurt. I definitely believe you can have happiness without hurting anyone. you just have to find the balance. |

I think I see that. you might desire (please) something, but at the same time realize that it will hurt you more in the end than make you happy. I want to drink a lot of coca-cola, that's what I'd please, but I'm not going to because I know it won't really make me happy. (it will rot my teeth). |

The purpose of life is plain and simple. To reproduce and survive through your children. The is how it has been for all life and that is how it shall always be. |
but I cannot reproduce, I'm sterile. oh and I'm also gay (as if you couldn't tell already based on my avatar/sig ensemble.) does that mean I should kill myself, since I appearently, according to your reply, have no purpose? |

Being human beings, we have the ability to choose our purpose in life, to the extent that to want some purpose is to choose that purpose. The purpose of life is a muddled question. We can only choose our own purpose(s), so it makes little sense to speak in generalities. |
no, it didn't influence my being gay. I've never been "motherly" and I've never wanted kids. I never liked the idea of it and don't think I'd make a good parent. it's just not for me. |

I wasn't trying to be offensive towards you. I actually didn't know you were gay until you told me but I just didnt look at your avatar and such. Anyways, what I'm saying is that reproduction is the meaning of life because that is how it is in nature. I can't change it, nor can you. However that does not mean you have no reason to live your life to the fullest. |
