      4. It offers you freedom from damnation.
      9. Promotes a positive look at humanity instead of negative. (most of the time)
      12. Saves countless hours otherwise spent sitting in a pew.
      15. Means you are allowed to laugh at South Park and Sarah Silverman
      16. People who are shunned by the church (like gays) are accepted.
      18. Free to use the lord's name in vain when striking one's own thumb with hammer
      [/quote]
      17. Morals are based on human consciousness and philosophy and discussion rather than dogmatic laws from ancient, completely outdated societies.
All of these are present in religion too, so you guys might want to post them in the 100 good things about religion thread.

      37. Helps people with limited spiritual faculties feel special

      38. Great rationale for saying, "Fuck it, nothing matters" in any situation
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

      39. It helps people understand why much of the material of South Park and Sarah Silverman is so damn funny. Same with Monty Python.

      40. It makes existence a question instead of an answer.

      41. It helps in the cause of raising children who don't think monsters are real.

      42. It allows you to take a piss without thinking you are being spied on.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

Wow... now I know what you two would do if you were atheists.

      *backs away... slowly...*

Edit: Hahaha, and how typical of you two to bash atheism rather than at least attempt to be civil. Just.. wow.

Pretty pathetic, isn't it? "Defunct of any morality" is a funny way to label a group that has one of the smallest representations in prison.

I love Taosaur's "38". I also feel that "46" may be in the wrong thread; perhaps the religious one would be better.

47: Atheism is the religion that takes the least amount of work. What a way to put on those spiritual pounds. But hey, it doesn't have a pension, so it makes sense.

You let me be the judge to that.

If you're not going to post something serious, don't post at all. I don't post in the thread about religion either, because I think it's pointless. Useful != true.

      48. You can practice spirituality without having to lie to yourself. You can have actual spiritual experiences instead of equating spirituality with superstition.

Now don't get personal or anything You guys started the heckling nextdoor, and half your "good things about atheism" are just potshots at religion, but I give you a little of your own medicine and it's a moral affront :-/

I am atheist in the strictest sense, insofar as the truth value of theist doctrines is irrelevant to me, unlike many of the antitheists posting above, and I posted several less controversial items farther back.

As for #38, Mes and Skysaw, why do you assume I'm talking about you? I never said all atheists are nihilists or even all nihilists are atheists, only that atheism provides a rationale for nihilism, with the implication that some people consider it good. Are you arguing that no one who rejects theism becomes nihilist? Do you believe that everyone who rejects theism becomes a brilliant logician and humanitarian? Now that's magical thinking.

      Fair enough.

But to include it in the list is to at least suggest that it goes hand-in-hand with Atheism as a core principle. At least that's the way it reads.

I was wondering who started it first before you posted this, and if you look it was psychology students post, "25: Defunct of any morality, so we can do what we want." and then Mark75's post in the religion thread.
