As I said in the edited version of the post you quoted, I love the idea. I even think there might be some truth to it, in a "Tao of Physics" kind of way. I just don't believe in a creator dude who acts like an arrogant asshole human. As far as something that is like pure consciousness and exists at the fundamental level of the fabric of reality and manifests its consciousness aspect in the forms of conscious organisms, I guess it is possible. I would really like to believe in it. There would be a sense of immortality that comes with such a belief. I definitely thought I saw it one time when I had what seemed like an acid flashback, or maybe a three hour moment of clarity. One way or the other, it is a beautiful idea.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

I'm with you on the anthropomorphic stuff, but you do realize that the Universal Mind idea is a still a conception of "God" right? At least some would call it that. You could of course believe it and chose to not call it "God", because of all the baggage that the word carries. It just seems to me that either way you would be more sympathetic to the idea of the original poster if you identify with the Universal Mind.

I gave him a serious answer, then fucked around, and then gave another serious answer. I was just throwing in some humor, not trying to dog him or the thread.

Oh, it's cool. I'm not trying to judge you, I'm just figuring out who’s who around here and your blending of Eastern religious ideas with dogmatic atheism confuses me a little.

It confuses me too. I am not somebody who claims to know with 100% certainty that there is not a much higher consciousness. It is just that I think the idea of it being human like and that it makes decisions in the way that we do is very unsupported and far fetched (to the point that I can truthfully say that I don't believe in it), and when people claim it, I like to get the bottom of why they claim it. Of course, I only do that with willing participants. I don't screw with people who didn't sign up for it... any more.

I was a dogmatic atheist in high school. I wouldn't say dogmatic, not even in retrospect, but I had settled pretty deeply into the idea that God was 99% unlikely.

I just realized with no concrete evidence for God or an afterlife, there was no point in including it in my perspective on the world. I think the thing that makes me different from most other atheists is that I never stopped searching for evidence of something more. I guess it was just a compulsion, part of the person I am, that just made me obsessed with esoteric, symbolic and spiritual ideas. I found what I was looking for studying in the East, and though I read a lot of people's ideas I consider fraudulant, I've still managed to come up with some basic concepts about existence.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Heya, my ideas of the supreme reality are not a million miles away from the starter of the post. For myself, i tend to refer to it as 'the Source', or sometimes simply the divine. I don't concieve of it as a person, so feel no need to give a persional name.

      keep on searching

How 'bout... "The Architect." dun Dun DUN!!!

Or we could call him Batman... that'd be cool.

"You must become one with the Batman... Batman is the universe."
      "Batman Akbar!"
      "Hail the Holy Mother Wayne!"
"Batman, you are a merciful Batman, Father Batman."

Ah... yeah let's call him Batman.
