      RCs: The perfect way to induce LDs

      Many people don't get results solely from doing RCs (Reality checks), and I think that's because they don't do them often enough. I mean, they should be done very frequently so that they are just cemented into your head; and then pretty soon you'll be RC-ing all the time without even thinking about it.

      In my opinion they should be done about once every 5 minutes. If you get about 6-8 hours of sleep every night, then that mean you're awake for about 16-18 hours a day. If you do a RC once every 5 minutes while you're awake, then that's about 192-216 RCs a day. I know this seems a little overboard, but you will get results.

      After falling asleep, you're first REM cycle (normally the dream cycle) will last about 10 minutes, so you'll have 2 opportunities to RC and become lucid. After more dream cycles, you're REM cycle may get up to an hour long (that's 11 more RCs, and it only takes 1 anyways!) It's foolproof. Of course when you're sleeping you're not as aware of what's going on, and you may forget to RC. But after a few days of 192-216 RCs per day, you will do it in a dream, and you will become lucid. The more LDs you have, the better you will become at them, and the less and less RCs you will have to do daily.

      Once you have had about 10 LDs using RCs, you can probably lighten the amount of RCs a day to about 1 every 10-15 minutes. A lot of people may not realize this, but the more DILD (Dream-Initiated LD) you have, the easier they become, and you'll find yourself becoming lucid almost by accident. DILDs become second nature, and you'll start to notice certain details that alert you that you're dreaming that you may not have noticed before. Eventually, depending on your success rate, you can stop RCing all together. You will have become so observational that you will already know you're dreaming or not just by looking around.

      I believe that RCs are the easiest technique to attain LDs. DJs (Dream journals) require writing down everything and racking your brain to recall the dream, and it just turns into a chore. Then people get frustrated because they don't get any results and so they quit. RCs are very simple to do, and you don't need a pencil and paper to do them. There are so many different ways to RC, and you can do different ones every time to keep it interesting.

      Of course another surefire way to get an LD is to WILD (Wake-Initiated LD). But again, these can be harder for people to do successfully. Not to mention, they require special concentration to achieve, and if you just want to crash and go to bed the normal, then you're going to need a DILD, which is where the RCs work.

      Nice read. Its a good idea to do every 5 mins.

      I do RC's every hour and its only gave me a lucid once. I'm going to start doing them every 5 mins.

Once studies have been conducted we can establish if it is really an effective technique.

      Five minutes? Man, that's gonna take some serious commitment...

      I'm willing to commit though. I'm gonna try this out, hopefully it will result well.

      Couldn't you just say something simple like "Am I Dreaming" every five minutes. Atleast questioning it would result in begining to go lucid in a dream. This way you only say a phrase and not have to do 5 RC's....

      I'm only aware of my surroundings after I do a reality check..I usually don't have time to constantly be focused on dreams(I've tried before).

      Asking yourself if you're dreaming is a form of a reality check. And you do 1 RC every 5 minutes, not 5 RCs.

      Higurashi, if you really want to try this method, then post your results after a few days.

      I will probably try this (as soon as I will come up with some sort of easy to use RC, nose pinch is a chore to use every 5 min , maybe digital watch will do) , but did you tried this method yourself?

      I'm trying this method out.

      This is my first day of trying. Tomorrow I will post results of whether it worked, and if it did, how many LDs I had, and their level of quality.

      I have good expectations for this.

      Yes, I tried this method over a weekend one time and it got really good results. I mean, I have LDs pretty frequently anyways, but I had 5 consecutive LDs (one each night for 5 nights) after I tried this.

      Keep in mind, when I said about 1 RC every 5 minutes, I meant for that to be pretty loose. You don't need to carry around a stopwatch with you, just constantly check throughout the day. The RC shouldn't be drawn out or complicated, because that would get tiresome. I just looked at my hands every once in a while throughout the day (I don't know if you guys have had LDs, but your hands will usually be messed up looking for some reason). But again, use whatever method you want.

      I am trying this as well hold on..*Reality Checks* ok anyway, I will include additional notes to help out people who want to try this out. I have 2 easy ways to do RC's that are effective and doing them will not cause attention towards yourself and are discreet. They can easily be done within 5 min. each.

      RC 1: Finger Wave Count: This is well known throughout DV but it’s highly effective especially focusing on your fingers/hands. The trick is when dreaming extra fingers like to pop up. So what I like to do is count my fingers while kind of “Waving my fingers” best way I can explain it is with 1 hand type of bunch of random letters but in wave form. So I move them in a wave like form and count them simultaneously. My last recent time I counted 7 fingers while I was lucid and it worked great!

      RC2: Fingers to Nose: This one is pretty well known as well. This is getting two fingers to cover your two nostrils (Or if you have 3 you can use 3 fingers as well) and inhale. If you are dreaming you will be able to breathe with your nose plugged with your fingers. I have done this several times when I attempted to WILD and I have had good success with it. It hasn’t failed me once.


      So every five minutes to the Finger Wave Count and/or doing the Fingers To Nose Reality Check’s to see if you are dreaming. They are two highly successful RC’s to do and will most likely provide the results you are looking for in my opinion.

      I am trying the Nose RC, coupled with the Finger-through-Palm (aka Finger Poke) RC and the "'Am I dreaming?' Observation and Analysis of Surroundings" RC.

      UPDATE EDIT: 3/18/09 - I didn't have a single lucid. But I did at least have better recall than I have been having recently, *reality check* and hopefully tonight this technique will prove worth the effort (even *reality check* though I haven't been doing it literally every 5 minutes because it's hard to keep up with at school and while playing sports and stuff )

      Interesting. Well, we'll see if I LD tonight, I guess. The improved recall seems to be a good sign.

      Ok, I joined the experiment. Bought digital wrist watches with organizer which I use for RC: I press button and word "DREAM" appears . Another type of RC is to look twice at the screen and if it changed unexpectedly then it is dream. Third is to explore screen if there some strange things: it have rather complex layout in "time mode" - day, year, time, world time, small schedule in the top and some symbol in top right corner, so chances are it will not be simulated in a dream perfectly.

      Results of first day: in a dream one guy brought me cassetes with audio course for lucid dreaming. I looked at them, said something like "funny cassetes" and proceeded with my dream life . Have not remembered to make an RC, so let's look what will be today's night.

      Second day: went very late to bed, so did not expect LDs, and there were not. All NDs were involving some kind of search. For example, in one of them I were searching my teleporter which I indeed used in some old dream.

      Third day

      Went to bed earlier than yesterday. No LDs. First half of night was very messy, and I do not remember much, but seems like I was searching something again.

      During the second half I was trying to find a stamp and a place where I could send a letter to my dream girlfriend. I was limited in time - the train was going soon (I missed it at the end and had to fly to get there, just to find that another guy in my compartment is a vampire .

      In another dream I tried to break out of prison using complex secret way out.

      In third I was a part of rebel group and we wanted to find a way out of city.

      So almost all dreams invoive a theme of searching and/or time. Let's look will I find what I really have to find .

      Remember not much dreams. In one I was searching where to change dollars to another currency.

      In the other I was reading forum about lucid dreaming! Did not remembered to look at watch .

      Actually since starting the RC's I have had better dream recall. My dreams have been more vivid and more 'real' and at times I wake up thinking " Wow that wasn't real, I totally forgot about this life" it's a trip. It's very cool, and I highly recommend you do this.

      The dreamsigns are everywhere!

      In one of dreams where some parts of my house were changing place like in Rubic's cube and unmanned aerial vehicle were as common as flies, I had a book about lucid dreaming (it dealt mostly with programming though).

      In another dream I and my collegue (we obviously were a part of some counter-intelligence force) found a suspicious guy and brought him to HQ. He had suspicious watches with a timer which was working. They were strange: digits were changing wildly, but I understood that it is a special watches connected to bomb!

      So close!

      Yes you are right about dream recall, maybe that's because consciousness is more active.
