It's not research or science - it's a technique for others to try to attain lucidity. I'll leave a redirect in here if it still seems a bit vague as to where it should live.

Yah, try whatever counter method you feel most comfortable with. Originally, I thought about starting out with a strip of paper, then cutting slits all around it's edge where you would pull off a tab for every RC. But, that would a) leave you with something to discard, b) was a bit too delicate to keep shoved in a pocket or something.
Ideally, a simple click counter (like the ones an umpire in baseball uses to count strikes and balls) would work best. But then again, might be too simple to use in a dream. The method needs to be a bit challenging to perform if you were in a dream, else you would simply keep on counting while you're dreaming and never realize it!
