erm. some of us have a rather profound love for the language; grammar and spelling issues are two of my biggest pet peeves!

it's a "form" of slang. in any very formal writing you can't use conjunctions. i argued this for weeks with my english teacher because he wouldn't let me use them in my paper, then he showed me MLA and APA format and he was right... bastard. i just figured since we're so picky about grammar we might as well do it right.

(yes i don't capitalize, i always mix too and to, i use conjunctions, and i suck at punctuation. ... what can i say? i'm a rebel.)

      WELL!

i have a couple things to say...

when it comes to typing on the internet, its ok not to put the apostrophe like in dont, cant, im, youre, theyre, or anything else. this is simply because when typing online, nobody cares if you dont use an apostrophe. same thing with capitalizing the beginning of sentences.

oh, and heres a good one:

      their=belongs to them
      there=not here
      theyre (they're)=they are

heres another one... when a word ends with an E, but you have an "ing" after the word, TAKE THE E OUT! that one really bugs me. for example, do NOT say "we are leaveing" or "he is breatheing" or anything like that!

leaving, breathing, giving, taking, etc. (and its etc, not ect.)
All I know is that i don't know nothing.

plus, remember people: their is plural!

"They like to eat their pizza." CORRECT

"Remember to smile at the customer to help make their day!" WRONG! --> "Remember to smile at the customer to help make his or her day!"

Yes, it can be cumbersome to routinely write "his or her," but one can always come up with new ways to write sentences in order to get the same idea across, w/o grammar errors.

I see this mistake all the time, including in supposed professional literature. like seriously...get it right!

which, if anyone actually cares, brings me to my next lesson:

      PUNCTUATION W/ QUOTATIONS:

The following punctuation always goes WITHIN quotes: . , ? !

The following punctuation always goes OUTSIDE quotes: : ; --

      Thus,

"Where did Marty go?" NOT "Where did Marty go"?

Phil threw his Molotov cocktail through the window of the "Chuck E. Cheese's." NOT ... "Chuck E. Cheese's".

Grammar arguements will be the end of this forum!!!! It has already driven one person away, and I predict in the future there will be a major clash between the powers that be of this board and poor unsuspecting idiots who never spell correctly. Thus will end dreamviews.com, giving way to GrammaticNaziRegime.com.

All people affiiated to this forum, will then seek other boards in which they can spill their incoherent banterings, but none of them will be able to take such nonesense. Thus the members will be ejected from them, which will prevent them from venting their mental chaos at anyone, and will cause them to become insane, chanting:

"Where is my little dreamy piece of slurpy juice??? I see cats, but can they really see the window of desire and fate???? Soup, Soup, Soup, Soup, Soup, Soup for all!!!!!!!!!"

      It is inevitable....
      If I hadn't made me
I'd be more inclined to bow
Powers that be would have swallowed me up
But that's more than I can allow...

That was actually a lot easier to read than some things some people write on this board.

And as a person that doesn't have english as main language I can just say that I like this thread. Time to learn some of that grammar I've been trying to forget for the past three years.

You can't say that it always goes inside or outside the quotes. That depends on what the quote is.

nope. the rules i stated are not flexible; people just screw up a lot. i'm absolutely positive the rules i stated are always correct.

      here's another:
      punctuation and parentheses:

if beginning the sentence w/ a parenthesis, then the closing punctuation ( . ? ! ) goes inside the closing parenthesis; otherwise, the closing punctuation goes outside the closing parenthesis:

      e.g.

      (Marty sure likes pizza.)

Marty decided to order pizza (because he loves it).

Well, in that case the english rules are different on that part from the swedish ones. According to my book punctuations goes within the quotes if they were part of the original quote, otherwise you skip them and put them outside the quotations. But it's been a few years since I studied english grammar so you should know better.
