I understand when something says 100%. I thought 100% meant all of whatever it is. Well I've noticed that some things will say 300% or 250% or 150% etc. How can there be more than 100%? I just don't get it. Am I missing something extremely obvious? Is this common sense, because I do lack alot of that? Maybe I learned this in math, but I sucked at math and I never paid attention.
Please be kind

Percentages are a simple matter more or less. 100% means the full degree/amount of something.

So, for instance, 150% could either be used as a figure of speech in a way, saying "Our chances are 150%!", meaning utter confidence beyond just being sure.

Or in more precise maths and what not, one can commit different operations with percentages above 100%. For example, if you were to...

100 + 150% (150) = 250

Or...

10 x 200% (20) = 200

In that case percentages simply relay the amount of a certain given number, even larger than the original.

Also, why is this in Senseless Banter...?

Well a 110% of 200 is 220.

It's like adding an extra percent onto the sum.

I didn't really know where to put it. Somebody can move it if they want...I guess it's not really senseless huh?

Alright so what about on vitamins...When it says something like:

vitamin A................................200%

That's where i normally see it, on vitamins.

So, but...grr...erm....*sighs*. This is confusing. So, saying something is higher than 100% like you know how coaches tell their team to give 110% then that's just like...give you best? MAN!! I hate math...I'm failing it as is...*sighs* That was always a question that confused me too...

Yeah, when you say like "I'll give it 110%" it's just you emphasising you'll give it your best shot.

But the above math part gives me a headache. I must really suck at math...

When we're multiplying, 100% can be defined as 1. So if you've got 100% of $100, then the math would look like this

100*1=100[/b]
So, let's say you've got 200% of $100 the math would be

100*2=200[/b]
If you've got 150% of $100 the math would be

100*1,5=150[/b]
One percent is 1 devided by 100. One hundred percent is 100 devided by 100. 33 percent is 33 devided by 100.

If you see somewhere, that a company will return 150% (extremely unlikely) of the money, if the product doesn't work, you'll get the product's worth back + 50%. Let's say that the product is woth $50.

Since we know that 1%=1/100, 150% must be 150/100=1,5. Therefore, $50*1,5=$75.

If a couch says "Give it 110% guys!", then it's usually just a metaphor, not a mathematical thing.

If you're still not understanding, read my post over again, until you understand it.

That's where i normally see it, on vitamins.

that means that the government has decided that we should all have a certain amount of a certain vitamin each day. for the sake of an easy example, let's say that they have decided that we should each have 10 mg of vitamin A every day. so if this thing that you're eating has 20 mg of vit. A, it has 200% of the RDA (recommended daily allowance).

make sense?

When people use over 100%, they are comparing numbers.
For instance...
20 is 200% of 10
Its just another way of saying
10 is 50% of 20

ya when 200% is like double something. like a population rate or somethin. if a town with 5000 has grown to 25000, it has grown 200%(5000<100% + 5000<100% = 200%) of its original population. Maybe not the best explanation, but best i could do.

200% of 5000 is not 25'000, it's 10'000.

This is easy to explain; I don't know why you've all made it so complicated.

Let's take say 150%, that's equal to 100% and then another 50% of that added on. It's very simple.

You guys are trying to make this way too complicated.

Alright, you know that all of something is "100%".
25% would be a 1/4 (quarter) of that.
50% would be 1/2 (half) as much.
75% would be 3/4 (three quarters) of that.

Let's say we're referring to prices. We've got a book that costs $10:

If I charge you 100% of the price then I'm charging you full price ($10).

If I charge you 25% of the price then I'm selling you the book for 1/4 of the price ($2.50).

If I charge you 50% then I'm selling you the book for 1/2 price ($5).

75% would be 3/4 of full price, or $7.50.

Now, If I charged you 150% then I'm asking full price (100% = $10) plus an additional 50% ($5) for a total of $15. This is because I'm charging you full price + half of the full price.

If I charged you 200% then I'm charging you twice as much as full price because I'm collecting 100% twice.

The same idea applies to where ever percentages are applied. For example:

If you normally spend 1 hour on DV every day and you were to increase your time by 250% then you will now spend 2 hours and 30 minutes a day at DV. You've increased your time by two and a half (100% + 100% + 50%) (1 hour + 1 hour + 30 minutes) (1 + 1 + 1/2) (250% = 2 1/2 times as much).

Any percentage above 100% gets added to original, meaning you've got the original plus a certain amount more.

And, yeah, the expression "Give a 110%" is nothing more than wordplay to signify giving as much effort as usual but with even more added in.
